Quick Potstill Question

Post by Shifty »

Hi there,

First try using still as a pot still....

What temp do folks collect up to when distilling for say, a rum wash?
85C, 90C?

Also - Do pot still runs tend to have more color to the distilate then the crystal clear reflux runs?

Thanks

HM,

So, do you make the run until the proof drops to 90-100 (45%-50%) at the end?
Also - Why did you move away from Blackstrap?

Thanks!

HM,

Was doing a small rum-alike wash earlier today, and was watching both temp (at top of column) and proof.
The temp was running about 84-85C at the top of the column, and the abv was running at 78-80% while I was doing the run (pulled the plug - or snuffed the flame rather...) because something came up...
My question is (remember...first attempt at a pot still run)....at 84-85C, am I pulling ethanol or propanol (since according to the the temp chart on the Homedistiller page, propanol has a boiling temp of 82C)?
When I did my past reflux run, the temp held steady between 78-81C, so I never gave it a second thought. Guess I wanted to make sure that I was not distilling rubbing alcohol today!

Thanks!

HM,

Thanks for the patience and the info. Guess that means that the tails include Propanol, since the temp (I know, I know...enough with the temp!) would indicate such?
Guess I need to stop worrying about that, and watch the alcometer instead.

Shifty.
