ethenol and alcohol

Post by Captin Moron »

Whats the difference? :?:

I know both terms get you drunk, but why the different names, is it the state each chemical is in?

Ethanol is an alcohol.
Just like Methanol, Isopropyl, ect.
I think the name comes from the molecular make up, Chemistry class was too long ago.

Ethanol or ethyl alcohol(C2H5OH) is a member of the alcohol family. Not all alcohols are good, methanol(CH3OH) is a good example of a "bad" alcohol. Pretty much any carbon chain with a hydroxyl (OH) on it is an alcohol AFAIK.

When people say alcohol, they usually mean ethanol.

EDIT: To be more precise about the hydroxyl thing, carboxylic acids(COOH) also appear to have a hydroxyl present but they are a different functional group altogether.
