Using Neutral spirits

Post by crackher »

I have read the pages.

But is it possible to achieve a resonable (preferably better) tasting favloured spirit using neutrals as a base. I have a reflux still (I know I can run it empty, without packing) and achieve something similar to a pot but I am wondering does anybody really do this practise here? I am trying to gauge what it will turn out like? It depends on what I am making I know but sort of on the whole, or a 'rule of thumb'

Crackher, just to make sure I understand you, you're talking about running an already distilled neutral spirit through your still with a flavoring agent? I know there's a distillery here that buys pure ethanol and then distills it to make gin. So it can be done.

Yes, you can make a good flavored spirit by using neutral spirits.
I have heard that using store-bought essential oils (from the pharmacies) work great, I believe I was told about 5 drops per quart, along with about a cup of sugar. I heard the cinamon oil is a good one. Strawberry is always good for a panty-dropper. Or you can do it the old fassioned way, and fill a jar with some frozen fruit, the top it up with your spirits...let it sit for quite a while....strain off the liquid, and cover the fruit with sugar...keep adding the syrup back to the spirit to taste (keep adding sugar to the fruit until the fruit is dead you can use the extra syrup on sundays and pancakes).
