Stirring the wort

Post by OldStormy »

Hi All,
From reading the site it appears that for best results (1) the fermenter should stay sealed throughout fermentation by using an airlock, and (2) the wort should be stirred during fermentation. My idea for comment is a s/s egg whisk on a s/s tube handle fitted into the fermenter through the lid via a grommet similar to the airlock. Such could be used to work the wort anytime without raising the lid. I envisage a s/s washer welded to the tube to ensure it doesn't hit bottom. Comments please. Has anyone tried this?
Cheers,

That should work . I do cap my ferminters and use an air lock. Use to just cover with a cloth to keep critters out and lay something over it to keep rain out.But when I stir mine I uncap and stir. I like looking my wash over while Im stirring.I do gently stir fruits or anything that caps and could dry out every day or so but on sugar or rum washes I only stir a few time at end of fermint.
I use a pot still.Sometimes with a thumper

You don't say what sort of wash. A sugar wash doesn't need stirring. At least, mine doesn't.

Hi Linw & All,
My initial wort will be a simple 20lt sugar wash so stirring may not be necessary. Down the track I may need to stir with other worts in use.
Thanks for the input.

I believe you need to stir up sugar washes too. The stirring drives out excess gases produced during the fermentation process. Alternativley, leaving the wash for a few days after fermentation, the gases will disperse by themselves.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the take I have on reading through the site.
