subject: Bacteria

After flavouring some 40% spirit with some classic whisky flavour, one bottle developed some sort of sediment or something which settled to the bottom of the bottle, this was a green to black sort of colour. Can a bacteria grow in alcohol, and if so what sort is it.

bacteria cannot grow in %40 alcohol.
the sediment you are seeing is just sediment.
solids that were suspended in the liquid which fell out.

Probably from the whiskey flavoring.

I'll stick with gin. Champagne is just ginger ale that knows somebody.

Most bacteria can not grow in over about 5% ethanol. Over 10% ethanol will kill most bacteria.

Where I live water is rich in calcium and when mixed with 95% alcohol particles of lime stone usually fall out as a thin sediment on the bottom of the bottle after a couple of days.

It only affects the apperence of the liquid and is harmless and will give no taste or smell.

I get rid of it by filtering the liquid through a funnel with some cotton wool.

You don't have to worry about bacteria ... alcohol is commonly used at a sterilizing agent to kill bacteria.
