Alcohol boiling point

Post by E85 »

Hello everyone.

I have a question about the boiling point of ethanol. If the mash was heated to just above the boiling point of alcohol, but lower then water's point, would you get just alcohol vapor? Or would it still be a mixture of the two?

You would collect a mixture. This is what happens when you use a doubble boiler.

First off, you can't raise the temperature of an ethanol/water mixture above the boiling point of the azeotrope,78 deg. C. Second, you can't distill pure ethanol from water because of the azeotrope.
Purposeful motion, for one so insane...
