Vanilla vodka

Post by Enlikil »

Ok i found some more info out about Vanilla . You can get CLEAR imitaion vanilla which has vanilla and some other things in it to give it flavor without the brown color.

So my question Should i put the Vanilla extract in the Wash at the begining of fermination?
Or should i add it to the spirit after the fact?

How bout if you threw a couple of vanilla beans in a pot still with a couple gallons of neutral spirit and did a quick run? It probably would give you lots of vanilla flavour with no colour.

something you could try: hang the beans in your column (on top of the packing,...)

That would be closer to how commercial vanilla vodkas are made. My understanding has always been that they are made through steam infusion.

The last batch I made had stunning flavour, though not strictly Vanilla (it included cinnamon, clove and star anise), but it did suffer from the "is that a sample?" comments due to the colour.

This batch will be run through the still with the split pods after about 3 weeks to steep. Hopefully I can keep the still cool enough to retain the more subtle flavours before blasting it to grab the heavier oils from the vanilla pods. :D
