Almost ready for first ever RUN!

Post by Reptile1 »

Hi All,

Firstly I would like to say what a great Forum this is, thank you to all concerned!!

I have a few questions before I do my first ever run :-

I am using a 25L alembic type pot still, I have tested with water and all seems fine no leeks etc. I am now going to use some old wine I have lying about in a demijohn (just to get used to it) The wine was made about 4 years ago and has a slight yeasty smell, if I run it through say 3 times will it be suitable for anything or would you just bin it after the first?

My second question is, I intend doing a grain wash around 20L and was wondering what kind of time scale (for the first run "high wines") I am looking at for planning purposes.

Hi tater, Thank you for your reply! I am not really new to the site just done lots of reading but not much posting!!!

This hobby is new to me as I haven’t experienced it yet. But I have been considering and gaining knowledge for nearly a year now.

I have done searches for the answers to my questions but with no joy.

Maybe I will just have to find out for myself, but thought this site was constructed to help and share information without it there would be NO site Right?

No offence meant but I have read until my eyes are sore!

kinda hard to say how long it'll take... I can do a stripping run in a few hours or 14 hours...

This is something you'll have to learn by doing.

now quit whinin' and keep readin'

oh and welcome...

Like tater said, be sure to check out the parent site. As for the above question, see this page:

http://homedistiller.org/calcs/pot_calc" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

With that page you can compute the timings you ask about. If you know the amount (20L), the starting temp (approx 26C), and the starting AVB of the mash, then you can compute the time it will take to get most of the ethanol out in a stripping run.
