I used this Simple whiskey reciepe: So a "no frills" whiskey recipe might go as ...
Heat 4 kg cracked or crushed malt with 18 L of water to 63-65 °C, and hold there for 1-1.5 hours. Heat to 73-75 °C, then strain off and keep liquid, using 250 mL of hot water to rinse the grains. Cool to below 32 °C (should have an initial specific gravity of 1.050). Add hydrated yeast & leave to ferment (maintain at 26 °C) until airlock stops bubbling and final SG of around 1.010. Let settle for a day, then syphon carefully into still.

My question is, I filtered out the grains, and pitched my yeast in the liquid only. SHould I have kept the grains in with the mash to ferment?? I've been reading opposing unclear information, so I'm confused if i did it right.
initial SG was 1.055

Can be done either way.Ferminting on grain is said to give more grain flavor to wash. .
I use a pot still.Sometimes with a thumper

If your grain is still clean, you could put it back in.
If it was easy everybody would do it.

Somebody forgot to tell my squirrel dog.
Light travels faster than sound. That is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

Don't yet ya'lls dogs eat grain that's been in contact with hops. Hops will mess a dog up bad, certain breeds like sight hounds are less tollerant.
