dont know if its yeast

my mate gave me a little container of brewers yeast and i dont know if it is accually brewers yeast because it was unmarked it looks and smells just like yeast but when i tried it in my latest batch of rum mash it didn't start fermenting so i dont know if it stalled or not or if the yeast is crap.

btw dont know if this helps but his mom feeds it to his cat and my mom does feed it to hers aswell..

Sounds like you've got a food supplement rather than active yeast.

no i know its called brewers yeast i just dont know if that its accualy yeast or some fancy stuff that wont work for my needs.

As Aidas said I't's probably brewers yeast which has been cooked , dried out and killed and used as a source of vitamins and minerals. She probably paid a fortune for it from a health food shop. Pet cats demand the very best.

but how could anyone do that to yeast. its a living organism and they murder it just to feed cats.....ohhh i suppose im letting it drown in its own waste. nevermind then.
