explosive backset warning

Got 5 deer last weekend, and did not have time to put all of them up. Had three of them quartered and put into the fridge downstairs where i keep my beer (and backset). Unfortunately, due to time constrainsts, and family in for the holiday, I was not able to get to the deer, or to run my secondaries to clean them out, and rack off my primary into my secondaries, and dump in the backset to get a new run going.

Had 5 gallons of backset, all were sugared, and one of them had raw corn in it (I put in 2 pounds of raw corn into the boiling backset to "sterilize" it). All of this was in 4L glass wine jugs. Unfortunately, I had the lids on too tight, because this morning, there was a boom/crash, and the wife and I both thought we had another shelving collapse for our canned goods (that was a BAD mess last year). Well, this time, it was sugared backset, corn, busted glass, and what a mess it was. Looks like there was a little something in the raw corn mix, that lived through the boiling backset.

Live and learn. I seem to get smarter every day, but sometimes the learning really sux.

had the same thing too
boiled yeast made gass!

4 deer, pff, meat for the rest of the year?

5 deer (3 does, 2 large bbucks). I will still get a buck and possibly another doe in Dec, and possibly a doe the first week of Jan. We eat a lot of venison, some wild turkey, pheasant, duck, and buy some live chickens from a farmer up the road. I am not really big into the corporate raised hormone infested food this country pushes out. I would much rather know where my food comes from (and also booze btw ;) ) Not quite self sufficient, but probably over half way there.

I hunt the rainwater basins (central part of the state, south of I80). There are numerous WMA's where you can publicly hunt. They are (or can be) loaded with ducks/geese. Also, the Platte and Elkhorn can be good for ducks (if you have access, which I do not). I grew up in central state, so the rainwater basins of Kearny Hall (and Cass?) counties are where I know best about waterfowl.

Just a thought Husker. If your gallon jugs are like mine, the glass aint very thick. And if the backset was even slightly warmer than the ambient temp where they were stored, they very well may have imploded. Same thing happens when canning as im sure you know. just that canning jars have pretty thick glass.

Just sayin.

Big ouch! Sorry to hear that. Hope she was OK. I hit a doe last fall about 6:30 in the morning going out to hunt, but fortunately, I was only going about 20 at the time, and hit the brakes a little, so only hit her about 15. Did nothing to my little car, and nothing to her (spun her butt end to the side a little, but she hardly broke stride).

Naw, These exploded. I had them in the bottle for about 2 weeks. Had them in the fridge and had taken them out. 5 days after taking them out, boom. There was glass all over a 200 sq' room (and some even on the ceiling), including high on the wall, 10' away (and big chunks also). No way an implosion did that.

The glass is damn thick. I would say, just over 1/4" (much thicker than my 22 oz beer bottles). I was kinda surprised the cheap plastic screwon lids held that much pressure. Live and learn. Usually I do not screw them down "too" tight. Guess I did that time.

Husker thanks for that...

we were both in the car and we were fine, a split second difference and that big boy might have been in out laps though... Got a 3 thousand dollar estimate to fix a subaru today... Makes me love my old truck with 340,000 miles on it. I doubt you could do 3k worth of damage with a baseball bat.

Your story reminds me of the time I put up some Hi-test in 5 liter wine jugs. I put it in a trailer that sits out in the Texas sun. I'll tell you though, the day I opened that door.... that trailer never smelled so good. screw caps are not my friend... I cork it all now.
