Can they beat 28 cents per pound?
Cheers,

Re: Sugar Price
Yeah, but them's Canuck pennies, right? So $1.27CAD is about $1.13USD for 4.4 pounds. That's a heckuva price. I buy 10 pounders for $4.89, that's a regular price. 49 cents a pound vs 26 cents.birdwatcher wrote:Can they beat 28 cents per pound?

Be careful buying large quantities of sugar from grocery stores and such because that’s one way the ATF finds moonshiners. They check with local stores for people who buy large amounts of sugar regularly and then they wait for you to make your next purchase and then they follow you out to your place. Then they wait till you leave and then they check your house to see if you are moonshineing.

Do you really think they bother the guys making their own these days? I know around here (Canada) if your keeping a low profile and it's for your own use, they probably won't bother you.oakie wrote:Be careful buying large quantities of sugar from grocery stores and such because that’s one way the ATF finds moonshiners. If your authorities down there are spending time and tax dollars chasing down the hobby moonshiner, then they better take a good look and consider a serious overhaul of their law enforcement system. After all there are a lot bigger fish to fry with all the huge grow op's and meth labs out there. How bout they put more effort into keeping guns out of the hands of all these nutballs who fly off the handle and kill innocent people! BTW...

Here's a thought; If the law wanted to catch guys like us, why not just track some IP addresses off this board? It would be easier than hanging around a grocery store and following someone home only to find out his wife is canning 300lbs of peaches.
I don't think the man is too concerned with the likes of us...(at least I hope he's not

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat all day and drink beer.

Sugar Price
By the way Bush. the sugar I'm buying is Lantic. Might be worth a phone call to see what they're charging for bulk.
Your're right Uncle Remus. I bought another 24 kg this morning and all the ladies were scooping it up for canning next Fall. Why am I buying it. Raspberry wine, of course.
You should be able to buy sugar much cheaper anywhere in the world. If you can't you're being ripped off. Read below for the reason.
London sugar ends near two-month low on fund selling
LONDON, April 18 (Reuters) - London white sugar futures
settled near a new two-month low on Wednesday on fund selling
and spread trades as the market digested Friday's record
delivery against the May expiry.
August <LSUQ7> closed down $8 at $312.50 per tonne in brisk
volume of 6,195 lots after trading from $311.00 to $321.20.
The contract, which earlier hit its lowest since
mid-February, was testing the floor of a $309.00-$314.00 range
that had held since the start of the year.
October <LSUV7> settled down $7.70 at $304.00 in steady
volume of 2,006 lots, having moved from $303.00 to $311.90. It
also hit a two-month low earlier in the session.
"It's fund selling mainly," a trader said, adding that trade
and arbitrage buying was giving support to London futures as New
York's raw sugar futures market edged down.
Dealers said the London market was still waiting to find out
where merchant ED&F Man would place the record delivery against
the expiry of the May contract.
"It's no surprise that it has been bearish today, you had
that big delivery of sugar last week," an analyst said.
"The whites are under pressure, probably less relative to
the raws, but the raws are going to come down and the whites
will come back down with them," the analyst added.
The 810,800 tonne delivery against the May expiry raised
questions as to where such a large amount could be placed.
Traders said ED&F Man, which was the sole receiver of the
delivery, must be confident it could find buyers for the sugar,
which originated mainly from Thailand.
But traders added that soaring freight rates could rule out
some markets.
ED&F Man has made freight enquiries to move bagged sugar
from Thailand to Asian, Middle East and Mediterranean
destinations, according to trade and freight sources.

Indonesia has bought 34,000 tonnes of Thai raw sugar,
officials said on Wednesday, in order to optimise capacity at
mills ahead of an expected drop in the cane harvest this year.

I'm sorry I didn't make my last post very clear. It's only large purchases of grain and sugar (more sugar really then anything else) regularly like 100 pounds of sugar a week or something. I don't know the specifics like how much sugar and how often needs to be purchased and I don't know if the stores are just instructed to give the authorities a call when there some suspicious buying or what.
All I know is that there's was a large outfit near me that got busted because a local store tipped off the authorities and then they followed the guys home with a little plains (the kind that uses a propeller in the front can't remember what there called.) They were a huge group though. I think they ran like a couple hundred gallons a week or something.
Any way just thought I'd give you guys a heads up since it happened out here.

Re: Sugar Price
Sugar around here has been going for about $8 per 10kg bag. I think this is true for most places in the world... the price is set by the commodities futures market. But not in the US... if I have my facts straight, very little sugar comes into the US from foreign sources. The big sugar producers in the US have a monopoly and therefore set their own prices.birdwatcher wrote:By the way Bush. the sugar I'm buying is Lantic. There was a documentary on one of the learning channels a year or so ago called ''Big Sugar''. It was about how big business took over the sugar industry. Anyway some of it was about how they managed to get sugar imports banned from the US... this is probably 100 years ago or so.
Quite an interesting documentary, if you ever get the chance watch it.
