molasses question

Sugar, and all about sugar washes. Where the primary ingredient is sugar, and other things are just used as nutrients.

molasses question

Post by tracker0945 »

Just going to mix up a simple sugar mash and the recepie calls for 1 tbsp molasses (unsulphured)
I do not have any.
Considering it is only a small quantity, would the molasses be there for taste or feeding the yeast?
The other ingredients are only sugar, tomato paste, lemon juice, sugar & yeast.
What would be an alternative?
It is a bokakob supermarket moonshine recepie and it will be going through a mini still twice.
My first attempt.

toss in a cup of brown sugar in place of a cup of white sugar. It should give you about equivalent material

I have decided to go without it, thanks to those who replied.
1. If it was for flavour, I think that as I am running it through the still twice with scrubbers, that should pretty much remove most flavours anyway.
2. If it was for yeast food, the tomato paste should cover that aspect.
Anyway, we shall see.
Cheers

I add 1/2 teaspoon of Vegemite for the B vitamins. Make sure it is dissolved fully in a little bit of hot water.

And 1/2 cup of bran to give the yeast some solid material to hang onto. Might not be necessary but don't hurt.

I also boil the tomato paste, Vegemite, bran, and lemon juice together in 1/2 litre of water for a minute to sterilise them.

Do you know if Promite would do the same job as Vegemite?

Vegemite, Promite, and Marmite are basically the same thing, just slightly different flavours. They are all made from dead brewer's yeast.

I have only used Vegemite, but I would be surprised if the other two didn't do the same job.

The Swiss also have a similar product called Cenovis.
