I usually stop my cuts at about 201. When it starts getting cloudy, I know that most of the alcohol is gone.

Like Husker said did you clean you rig real good first and had your mash finished fermenting.

When my mashes have finished, I don't taste any sugar and it makes your eyes water if you get your nose to close to close to the fermenter.

I run a pot still, I will start getting the do-bads coming threw at about 170f. Then the temp will jump to about 190f and stay there for the majority of my run, slowly rising to the boiling point.

Grape wine is brandy when you distill it. It should be water clear. When you taste it, pull some air across it has you sip, it should have a sweet, slightly fruity taste. I like it.

Run it slower. Either reduce the heat or increase the cooling to the column or both. That's a classic "too fast" looking run you've go there.

And for the person who asked, it's a Nova not a Chevelle.

Ok I am 4 L into this run on cheap red wine. It is clear now and bites your nose just a little if you take a deep breath. Doesnt have any bite when you taste it though. Is this right? Also should I run it twice to bring up the ABV?

Not that it's totally related, but you may want to get rid of that cooling line thru the bottom of the column. The "moonshine-still" design has many, many grievances listed about it.

I'd want to move that bottom line closer to the top of the column, but still keep the inlet into the condenser at the bottom, and make it perpendicular to the one that you've already put at the top (making an X when ya look at from the top of the column). This makes it sort of the "new ms-still" design.

Since you've said that this is a virgin run, I'd assume that its a cleanout run, and the cleanout run is always cruddy.

would never doubt uncle jesse about anything he says, but i think i gotcha on this one....... it's a chevelle, the nova's have a different front end and quarters are different...
please note, this will most likely be the only time in my life to correct you uncle jesse, so i'm overwhelmed with exhuberation (spelling)...

Ok I just made a run useing the new info. The top of the column is 175 and the top of the keg is 200. It is makeing what seems like high proof spirt. I used the shake method and it left no bead in the jar. Thanks for all the help!!
