My first brush with shine

Post by Cruisaire »

Flashback to the early 90s. I was working outside Harlan on an environmental cleanup project. We wore loose fitting coveralls to minimize contact with the debris. One of the men at the plant kept eyeballing the suits and one day he asked me about them. I told him they were cheap, disposable, but effective at keeping things off your body. He said, "I reckon they would keep the skeeters off me whilst I'm fishin'?". I said yes and offered the man several of these suits. It never hurts to show even the slightest kindness to someone, especially when you are a visitor in their town. Next day, 2 quart jars of a clear and highly volatile liquid were placed by someone in back of my work van. When I asked the man there if he knew anything about the jars, their contents or who left them, he just smiled and said, "No, but I bet it tastes purty good" and he went back to work. Well, I had a taste and if there's heaven in a liquid, that was it.

My Christmas present from a friend this year was a quart of 'shine from Harlan County. The card went to great lengths to assure me that this was safe and of good quality. I haven't tried it yet, thought about sending a quart of my own back to the stiller.
