Using beer as a source of nutrients

Post by boxcar »

when doing a sugar wash using red star champagne yeast, could you use homebrewed beer as a source of nutrients for the fermentation?

I ask this because I recently brewed a batch of beer that had a some flavor defects, and instead of distilling it all, wanted to add some to a sugar wash in place of yeast nutrients. is this possible, or a good idea

If it has hops in it,It will taste bad when you distill it.

If it was boiled with hops then yes it will have a bad taste. If it's only aroma hopped then you'll get a more palatable product. Never tried beerschnapps but it's out there.

it is hopped, not to heavily though, I'm not interested in making true beirschnapps, just using a quart or two of beer added to 5 gallons of a sugar wash in place of yeast nutrients.

just wondering if anybody has ever tried this

Your best bet is to use a little dried malt extract. You will get some malt flavor from it,and it wont be neutral but if you dont use too much,it would supply neutrents and not have too much flavor.

Beer doesn't really have that much nutritional value anyway. As stated, malt does, but when you fermented your beer, the yeast ate most of the nutrients.

Yeast is a good source of nutrients though. But the yeast left in your homebrew is not- until it starts to decompose those nutrients are locked away and not available to the yeast you just pitched in your wash.

I've once boiled a decent amount of yeast and added it to my next wash.
but I didn't compare it with a regular wash

I dont want to bring this too off topic....

But, I use a starter for every thing I do. When Making beer or wine, I use the trub from my previous batch as food for my next starter. It goes right into the water I'm gonna boil for the starter. While still hot, I add to the flask, add a nutrient mix from the LHBS, and (depending if wine or beer) add DME or Concentrate for sugar food.

IMO Yeasties love to eat their fellow yeasts... makes for many Ml of yeast in my starters.

Back on topic, NO... dont use beer for a food! Yeast are both Aerobic and Anaerobic. For propogation, (Aerobic) you want an O2 rich enviroment with no Alchohol in it.
