Been lurkin' here for a week or so, and have learned a lot in this short time, so I decided to join up today.

About a couple of weeks ago I finally got fed up paying $35 for a litre of Vodka or poor quality brandy (And 750ml of Remy Martin at $84 a bottle!) here in the Great White Northland of the Over-taxed. So I decided to investigate distilling my own. Went online and downloaded/purchased all the stuff I could find on home distilling. After a bit of reading, I figured that this can't be too hard to do, and it also seemed like a lot of fun, saving money giving the System the old middle-finger-salute!

I ordered an EasyStill (I know, I know, a lot of you think this was a big mistake!), and a Starter Kit from Smiley's Home Distilling. I've presently got 2 batches of wash fermenting right now, which I am anxiously waiting to distill. If I get anything decently drinkable (after carbon filtering), I plan on moving up to a proper reflux still. I am thinking of purchasing the Amphora PDA-1. Anyone here have any experience with one of these?

On a personal level, I'm 54 yrs. old, happily married for 33 years, (empty nesters now with an adorable 10 year old granddaughter), and work for General Motors as a line-repair electrician on steady midnight shift.

Welcome!If I were you,I would start out with a simple potstill type setup.
You can build it yourself,and it will make great booze,even vodka.Once you get your sea legs,you could move up to a reflux,but might find that you dont need to.Save yourself some bucks,and build one.There is plenty of info on here on how to,and we will be glad to help.

Hello. We like to (figuratively

) see new faces around here. It tells us that the craft is coming back into fashion, and if it goes on long enough, we may have a push through the legal system to get this legalized.

On a side note, is it just me, or are we starting to get a few more new Canadians than we have been? Just thought that it's interesting to note.

From what I've heard Aussies and Canadians are very similar (aside from the whole Commonwealth thing) so I would have thought there would be more Canuks (sp?) on here as well.

Welcome Autoworker--I'm from Ontario too--but a long darn ways from the GTA. Kansas City is actually closer.

I agree with Wineo. And you being an electrician will serve you in good stead.

All the info is on this site, however, I always recommend http://www.gin-vodka.com/making-gin.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow as a great investment. The author uses electricity as a power source for heating.

BTW I live in Central Ontario. Let me know if you make house calls.
