I only heard of 3 people getting caught in Aus. Two of them only got fined the amount of excise they should have paid on the alcohol made (a few hundred dollars) and had their product and equipment confiscated.
The other was fined $37,500 but deserved it. He was selling the stuff to "schoolies" on the Gold Coast. I don't know how much of the fine was for stillin' and how much was for selling to underage kids but he probably should have gone to jail - for giving us all a bad name.

Re: Difference in attitudes
Coops, if we are busted we do not run the risk of losing our property and assets! We are lucky in so far as it is not really enforeced that much. Brings to mind an article my Mum sent to me when she learnt I was distilling( I showed her the set-up) About a bloke in Canberra fined for moonshining. As the article went on, it became apparent he was raided for his amphetamine lab but they found a still in the shed. The idiot was selling both products.CoopsOz wrote:Is it just me or is there a massive difference in attitudes when it comes to shinin'? Not necessarily between the differing age groups in the forum but more so in where ya come from. It seems that in the US there is still much trepidation in discussing such activities because it is still considered a fairly serious offense, and the consequences for being caught are dire. Whereas here in the great country of Australia it seems concerns for ones safety are somewhat diluted. It is still illegal to own a still with a capacity of more than 5L but I can walk into at least 5 legitimate businesses within 20klms of here and buy a 25l one. They also sell all the turbos and flavourings etc. I know we don't have things like the "illegal whiskey unit" nor do we have the history of the revenoors.....or maybe it's just our criminal convict ways coming to the fore. I just think it is interesting, anyway, time for another UJSM!
I have never been one to blow my own trumpet. On Punkins locked forum he asked questions that were seen as inappropriate(I am not judjing either way), but as far as I am concerned the less people that know about my hobby the better. I tell select few people and show fewer the set up. There are 7 persons total that know of my set-up. Paranoid?, maybe. Want to left in peace? Absolutely.
