storing in drink bottles questions

Post by eternalfrost »

so i can get these sobe drinks for basically free. they are ~600 ml thick glass bottles with about 1.25 inch mouth. the caps on them are thin aluminum (im pretty sure, very light and soft, ive cut through one and its solid all the way inside whatever it is, not plated)

they have a plastic gasket under the lid but they are easily pulled out. without the gasket they drip verryyy slowly, like 1 drop per minuite if totaly inverted.

would these be ok to store product in? especially if kept upright so liquid isnt touching the lid.

what about finding fat corks for them?

also. what about basic snapple bottles?? they also have metal caps but dont have a plastic insert if i rember correctly.

is there any way to test if things are leaching into the alcohol?

any other good ideas for containers besides the obvious epmty wine/liquor bottles?

Also, can you store in mason jars? i know they have that rubber seal though. can you put of square of like waxpaper between the lid and bottle? or what about flipping the lid upside down and screwing on?

basically im having trouble finding a used liquor bottle hookup and am stumped as to where to keep my stuff!

Mason jars are a popular option. Also, wine/liquor bottles can be bought at any brew or winemaking store, along with the T-corks for them. They can be ordered from on-line stores but shipping is expensive.

Yes, those would probably work. If the lid leaks a little bit, or there's a rubber-like seal, I've found that putting a little square of aluminum foil really does the trick.

Ever since I've started, I've been storing this stuff in 1qt. corn syrup jars, glass gallon jugs, and green lemon juice bottles. I have two different kinds of whiskey low wines stored up, UJSM and wheat whiskey. I store the wheat low wines in one color and the UJSM in another so as to not mix them up.

find a place that sells a lot of corks. They are cheap, and glass bottles can be picked up from bars, caterers, anywhere....

glass and a cork has worked for many many years...

whats the maximum % alcohol you can safely store with aluminum?

ive seen its safe for 'normal' liquor like 40% but can be dissolved by fuel grade ethanol (85%)

Don't worry about the plastic piece in the cap, that is what will keep the air out. I know that you don't want plastic to touch the liquid, so just under fill it a little bit so that you can store it upright. If you are looking to have air hit it then just screw it on loosely and air will flow in to touch the distillate.
