MAPP torch question

Post by Cmonster »

I'm about to do another round of still making and figured it was time to upgrade my propane torch and get a MAPP one. So I went to Bunnings today and it looked like the MAPP and propane Bernzomatic cylinders have the same screw fitting for the flame/torch bit. The whole MAPP kit was $94 but the cylinder alone was about $29.

Can I use my existing propane torch fitting on the MAPP cylinder?

cheers.

They are different and holy crap, the kits here are about $40 usd and the cylinders are $7. I got a Oxy/MAPP kit for $50 and both cylinders are $7 each. That is a rip off though the Oxygen lasts about 5 minutes each. But yeah the torches are different.
15 gallon pot still, 2"x18" column with liebeg condensor on propane.
Modified Charles 803 w/ 50gal boiler, never ran so far.

OK, thanks trthskr4 and hookline - I'll pay the extra to make sure things work sweetly :?

By the way hookline, I have long thought a great name for a legal firm would be hook, line and sinker. cheers, Cookie

Your LP Orifice is a lot smaller then the map-gas orifice. You can buy a set of different heads or possibly change out the orifice. If you ran the the LP gas threw a Map gas orifice, you'd probably have a foot long flame  I Personally like Map gas over LP. Map is Hotter and Cleaner.. I hate Working on Anything that runs on LP! Always Always a Mess to clean and fix..

bernzomatic makes several multi-application torches that can be used for MAPP &/or propane.

The torch I have fits my current propane burner. I'm not sure how I could tell if it is suitable for MAPP.

Anyway, I've thought about it and I figure it might be an advantage to have two torches capable of running at once - for those times where some extra heat will be useful.
