phpBB 3
OK I upgraded to the latest and greatest. Hopefully it's a step forward not a step backward! I'll look into a chat module soon.

Re: phpBB 3
Upgrades are usually good - I'm having a bit of trouble getting used to the new skin though - will take a while to adjust!

Re: phpBB 3
Yeh not quite used to the skin myself yet. But the admin functions and built-in anti-spam stuff are far better.

Hopefully the anti bot features are heaps better than phpbb2. It's a pain in the butt installing some of those php cracks.Uncle Jesse wrote:Yeh not quite used to the skin myself yet. But the admin functions and built-in anti-spam stuff are far better.
Re: phpBB 3
It certainly is a bit different and might take a day or three to get used to it, but it looks okay to me.
The only suggestion I have is to make the text black instead of dark grey, the higher contrast makes it easier on my aging eyes to read.

Re: phpBB 3
I haven't migrated to 3.0 yet... are there any other styles out yet that you can release to the users?... or do you have that locked...
As for the chat mod, Im using the Sigma mod, don't think it is 3.0 compliant, but the Ajax mod seems to be. If you have access to the root Apache on your server, maybe think about Smartor mod.
Did you enable spell check?... cant see it.
Lookin Good Bud.

Re: phpBB 3
If people want the older "look and feel", then simply do this:
click on "user control panel" link
Select "Board preferences"
Select "Subsilver2" (default is "prosilver").
The look will be back to the older 2.0 layout (well pretty close to it).
There are a lot of enhancements. So even the subsilver2 looks different, but it is still close to what it was.

My God, I don't log on for a couple of days and this. I have to admit, I'm struggling a bit! I'll get used to it in the end but I'm usually not one for change.

Awesome.
I'm going to love the ability to book mark threads in my user control panel.

I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it left.
Re: phpBB 3
I JUST spotted that myself, and was going to post about it. I take it, bookmarking is new with 3.0. I do not remember seeing it (certainly does not mean it was not there), in the 2.?? version from before.GingerBreadMan wrote:Awesome.

Re: phpBB 3
It is new for 3.0 - probably the most awesome new feature for this upgrade.
Edit: For anyone that hasn't noticed this new feature. When viewing a thread, if you like it and want to book mark it, scroll down to the bottom of the page. You'll see a button called bookmark thread. Click the button.
Now when you go to your User Control Panel, you'll see all the thread you've bookmarked, but clicking the manage bookmarks link.

Re: phpBB 3
There is also a "friends and foes". Thus, you can add 3rdDuke as a foe, and the site will ignore him for you (well, mostly ignore).

well one big advantage is that this version will find out the inactive users and let me either email them a reminder or delete them permanently. so users who registered but never activated can be handled better.

The one thing i just haven't been able to get used too (besides the avatar thing) is the page numbers to the right of the topic. I just keep clicking on the topic only to scroll and scoll and then find i'm on page one of a 19 page thread

Re: phpBB 3
I believe that is how it works. There is a section for adding friends and a section for "foes". I do not know exactly how phpBB works, but I think that foes are simply ignored. There are some issues with that. Thus, threads can get strange, in that you are only seeing 1/2 of a flame war, and can be confused, and reply improperly into a 1/2 of a conversation. But exactly "how" it works, I do not know, as I have added no foes, and thus have not "tested" it out.DestrutoMutt wrote: husker wrote-so if i wanted to avoid reading posts by "Johhny Reb" or "Bo Duke", i would list them as a foe? There is also a "friends and foes". The site "might" give you a "link" listing that "Johnny Reb" posted, and you can click the link to read the post. However, it might also simply drop the post and you have no idea that a post was done.
Guess we need some testing of how this works.

Re: phpBB 3
I had a cruise through all that stuff yesterday Husker. What i remember it saying is that it won't show the entire post. I assumed that to mean it would show a header to indicate a post was there, or even a blank post with posters name.
It'd have to be a pretty big problem or a very big board to have to worry about that stuff anyway.
From what i've sen of forums though, most people thrive on the drama of it all, so i'd think an ignore list would be very rarey used

I agree, punkin. One can use ignore/block to avoid a contributor tpunkin wrote:From what i've sen of forums though, most people thrive on the drama of it all, so i'd think an ignore list would be very rarey used
who annoys the crap out of you, but nearly always there's some smart arse whom you haven't blocked/ignored who takes up the case and then they have to be pissed off as well. It can go on forever.
The only answer for me is to leave the forum/channel, because I just can't be bothered tolerating the constant niggling. I choose this option, because I'm not good at enduring bullshit, but it means that one can lose a good source of information and idea exchange or just plain fun chat.
However I find that in the long run it's better to leave the group than tolerate the crap. Then everyone is happy.

Just hope ya don't get fed up with this one then, i definately appreciate your dry humour, your ability to cut through the bullshit and your irreverence. Sits very nicely with the way i'd like to view myself in my more romantic moments.

Re: phpBB 3
So far, I really am liking the new look/feel of the phpBB 3.0. However, it seems a little slow to render the pages.
Wonder if it is because of more eye candy on the pages? More little graphics, rounded corners, etc. I bet that cause more page load time, due to more "hits" on the web site to load up all the new little jewels.
Other than that, I have found little (very little) that I do not like about this upgrade.
The look is much better, and there are more things (tools), easier to find.
H.

Wanted to chime in and say I really like the upgrade. Im not usually one for flashy things, and am usually a function over form fellow, but I really like this new version.
Anyway, came by this thread after searching for an rss feed, so I'd like to second that request i guess Rss provides a nice way to keep up on current topics at multiple sites. To me it can be easier to learn sometimes by watching what other people are asking and discussing...you sometimes run across things you wouldnt have even known to look for.
Anyway, just a suggestion..I really love the plade and appreciate all the work that goes in to running a site like this, and thanks to all who work to make it happen!

Re: phpBB 3
I think the new version is more mysql-intensive so it does more searching through databases than the previous. As I said I notice it actually keeps accurate track of threads I've posted to, read and so on.
Just a guess though. It does have a few more bells and whistles.
As for RSS, I'll look into it.

Re: phpBB 3
I don't know if other users have noticed this, but every once in a while, I follow a link on here and it turns out to be in huge, garish text that I have to refresh the page in order to get rid of. That means that all of the flagged new posts turn off and I have to look through all of the posts to find where the new ones start. I dunno, maybe it's just my computer (shouldn't be, it's fairly new).
It's not that it's a real big problem, just an annoyance.
