Where's your shed?

Little or nothing to do with distillation.

Where's your shed?

Post by MountedGoat »

For those of us that don't have a private garage/shed/40 acres, where is it that you are doing your distilling? I am having the damndest time trying to find a place to do my distilling without worrying about people just walking up and saying hello. Also all of the places that I keep thinking will work...don't. So I am looking to see what other people are doing. Mainly people that are in neighborhoods and the other half isn't letting you use the garage as "people/kids" might see you.

Are you finding a friend and bribing them with booze?
Are you just doing it behind the back of said people (which I don't want to do)?

Let me know as I am trying to get a steady flow of UJSM giong and can't get to my first on that is done fermenting and sitting in the bucket!

I guess I'm lucky...I live on 120 acres, mostly wooded, 2 miles from the nearest highway. You can't see my place from the gravel county road. I sometimes shut the gate on the driveway and even if I don't there is an alarm that tells me if anyone turns in the drive. I have several out buildings and a barn, one of the buildings being a large workshop with an attached blacksmith shop. That's where I work on my "hobby".

Unfortunately, you may be stuck doing it indoors or at night when everyone is asleep.

I run my 50 litre electric pot in the kitchen. My only worry is that the police come to check my gun license once a year, they are supposed to notify that they will be coming but I have heard of them going to places unannouced.

Maybe but you don't have to invite them inside.

Hi track. They have to come inside to check my gun safe. We are required to have 2 safes here, 1 for guns, the other for ammo and bolts.

Fair enough BB.
In that case I would agree with Punkin, better for them to get a bit testy than for you to get caught.

Cheers.

I usually do my runs in the evening and I make sure to pull it all apart after every use, they can't bust me for bits and pieces.

Same here. Except for one, all my neighbours are some distance away, and the rule around here is live and let live. Don't interfere with their lives and they won't interfere with yours.

Sounds fair to me.

And have fun.

I think I just found a place that I can call "shed". Gotta cousin on a farm that needs some hooch and likes the idea of running a still. Figure we can brew some beer and still at the same time, all while having a couple for ourselves

I live in a sub-division and a RCMP lives next door.(royal canadian mounted police as if you all didn't know) His house is about 30ft from mine. I run the still in the garage with the big door open about 2ft for ventilation and to run the water hoses. My lot is only 98ft X 140ft or something like that. I run it in the evening/night or try to, but the wife was gone a couple weekends ago and I ran all friday night, all saturday and some sunday.
Do what ya gotta do I guess.
Numerous 57L kegs, some propane, one 220v electric with stilldragon controller. Keggle for all-Grain, two pot still tops for whisky, a 3" reflux with deflag for vodka. Coming up, a 4" perf plate column. Life is short, make whisky and drag race!

Not too sure about that BB. I think the buggers get you for having a lyne arm (xx penalty points), a condenser (xx penalty points), any booze (ditto) and on and on it goes.

I hope I'm wrong, but from memory this info came from Harry and it's probably correct.
Simple potstiller. Slow, single run.
(50 litre, propane heated pot still. Coil in bucket condenser - No thermometer, No carbon)

I seen one on the net/ news - they arrested a guy , they could not prove he was making shine so they got him for having a different product in the bottle than what was on the label. (he was putting shine in commercial alcohol bottles)

Unless they could prove it was used in commerce,I would think even that was a bit of a stretch. Still, probably thought himself lucky and took a plea. Shame. Now he'll have to buy storefront likker. Well the good Lord giveth and the taxman taketh away.

Amen!
