I know how to deal (very throughly) with bots that rake pages for email addresses etc to spam your personal e-mail address...
No clue on the ones that advertise by spamming forum threads.
If you are referring to the kind that get your email addy solutions include complex spam-bot shaking scripts that go around the email addy, posting it as an image instead of text, or much simpler and more effective google 'Spam Poison' - you can get the coding for a button that spam bots follow and get trapped in, being fed an infinite stream of email addresses that cannot exist trapping it in a loop from which it needs to be manually reset. The bot will have this happen to it again on any page it goes through with the Spam Poison button on it.
Another mickey post on the Mellbourne Supplies thread.
It is the very things that we think we know, that keep us from learning what we should know.
Valved Reflux, 3"x54" Bok 'mini', 2 liebig based pots and the 'Blockhead' 60K btu propane heat
I fully agree with THM. If posts (that are 100% for sure spam) get flagged by users with the "flag this post" button, it makes clean up (and banning the poster) pretty trivial.

Good to hear, I really didn't know what happened behind the scenes after hitting that button but figured I'd follow the directions. Thanks for keeping the forum clean as possible.
15 gallon pot still, 2"x18" column with liebeg condensor on propane.
Modified Charles 803 w/ 50gal boiler, never ran so far.
I moderate another forum, I hacked the php code a little and now the spam bots cant get on our site, and can't access the email adresses.
its some simple code hacks, but they're very effective.
occasionally we'll get a manual spammer,a person not a bot, that will post all sorts of crap, but we delete his stuff and ban his IP. its just too much bother for him to come back.
the bots are fooled really easily, so theyer not a problem as long as you're not running standard phpbb software.

Did that for a time but was not very good at it (thankfully) got put further back in the line.
Cheers
WTG, tracker. Cunning bastard.
Simple potstiller. Slow, single run.
(50 litre, propane heated pot still. Coil in bucket condenser - No thermometer, No carbon) The Reading Lounge AND the Rules We Live By should be compulsory reading
Goose, if you want to report a spambot all you have to do is click on the little red exclamation mark in the bottom right hand corner of the bot's comment, and it will get reported to the mods/site owner.
I run a couple of phpbb boards and there is a very simple "mod" available that absolutely eliminates ALL the spam bots. Since I used it I have not had one bot make it through in many months (though I can see they keep trying). This mod is simple enough that even dummies like me are able to quickly and easily install it.
If you want the reference and method just PM me, be glad to help. I hate those bastards...
