want to know
just was wondering how come ther ant a chat room in this site like ther is in the beer & wine berwers site called brewboard i think thats what it was called anyway
Re: want to know
I'd guess it's because this site has people from across the entire 24 hr time zone spectrum. It would be hard to carry on a conversation from NYC to Brisbane in real time. The Aussies would all be asleep. And Vice versa.

Re: want to know
Never have liked chat rooms myself. On a discussion board, there is more time to give thought to what is said, and we don't end up spoonfeeding someone that's too lazy to do the research.
It is the very things that we think we know, that keep us from learning what we should know.

If there was a chat I believe that to much info could be potentially be lost and unsearchable, and what Hawk said.end up spoonfeeding someone that's too lazy to do the research.
How much more input do you need that you can't get now ?that way ya can get more input on your questions
Re: want to know
That is a very good point, Tomf.If there was a chat I believe that to much info could be potentially be lost and unsearchable,
On balance, I think a chat forum is not such a good idea. Considered (and permanent and searchable) responses are much better for this hobby.
This ain't stamp collecting.

Re: want to know
I've never used the chat function on any sites i'm a member of. I, like others have pointed out, like to be able to type at my leisure and i like to be able to read what others have said even when i'm not there.
I also like to be able to go back and read things again once my understanding of something as complex as this art is deepens to be able to comprehend at another level some of the things that are being explained. A lot of stuff here on the site is still above my level of understanding, but more is becoming clear to me all the time.
That would be lost in chat.

Re: want to know
this site is paid for out of the pocket of UJ, to add a chat feature, while neat, would be a bandwidth killer. bandwidth costs money and I'm gratefull for what UJ has been kind enough to provide and won't be asking for more than he's willing.
speaking of which, UJ ought to get himself a paypal account, I'd happily contribute to the running costs of this forum.

I second that motion! Lord only knows how much $ this site has saved me, I wouldn't mind returning the favor.violentblue wrote:speaking of which, UJ ought to get himself a paypal account, I'd happily contribute to the running costs of this forum.

Folks have suggested a paypal button here before and UJ never took 'em up on it.
I suspect he's a believer in the maxim "Information wants to be free".
If ya really want to put in a bit of effort to tell him thanks, hit up yer local bottle shops to carry Pioneer Spirits. They are makin' a corn whiskey and a light rum currently. Here is a contact E-mail for Pioneer Spirits: info@pioneerspirits.com
So if ya wanna thank UJ in a meanin'ful way, get yer local bottle shops to carry his products, and then buy 'em.

Re: want to know
Yep, I tried to get him to take a contribution a while back, and put in a paypal button for himself. He wouldn't have it and dropped the conversation. He truly believes in the spirit of this forum and it being free to all who seek it. I appreciate him personally and hope he gets his just reward from his business venture and I will ask my local liquor store to check on stocking his products.

Re: want to know
Well folks I can't get into my reasons for "no advertising" without getting into politics Suffice it to say I believe information should be free. I'm not that big on money as long as I can provide for my loved ones. And I don't want it to seem like I'm the only guy who runs this site. I try to change things when users come up with good suggestions and I try to let the community steer the conversations, content and so on as much as possible.
I've had online companies ask me to let them advertise and they offered me cash on the barrel head. I wasn't even tempted.
I will look into configuring an IRCD soon...I hope. No promises as I'm busy lately but I'll see what I can do. We've discussed a chat room many times and it would be nice to get one back. We did have one for a while until a server crash killed it. IRCD isn't tough to set up but I do have to familiarize myself with the setup again.

well, I'll just buy some booze from your new distillery then
Re: want to know
I agree and appreciate that. However, there is work and time invested by you in this website, not to mention equipment. That makes it free to me, but not free to you.Suffice it to say I believe information should be free.
I would feel better if there was a way that I could contribute to the maintenance and upkeep that you are currently shouldering by yourself. I have learned a great deal from your efforts. I have gained knowledge that is priceless to me. I have gained skills that give me ineffable satisfaction. I have been able to produce something that brings me tremendous pleasure, that would not have happened but for this site.
In any apprentice/craftsman relationship there is a fair and reasonable contribution between both parties. The Craftsman provides direction and teaching and the benefit of years of experience. The apprentice provides labor that frees the Craftsman from mundane tasks. I have benefitted without repayment in kind. If you think about it carefully, it is not fair to the apprentice to benefit without being able to pay back, without being a contributor.
I simply propose that in this situation you are the Craftsman and I the apprentice. Since I can not be there in person to provide labor that gives you more time to spend on advancing your craft, then I could, if kindly allowed, provide a nominal compensation that would stand in the stead of the missing labor.
Do I ask too much? Will you not allow me this small sign of respect?

In a word, I think yes. UJ has made his position clear, namely that information is free, a notion held in great esteem by many in this world. Even a single cent, especially in the tortured guise in which it is presented, disrespects that position.I simply propose that in this situation you are the Craftsman and I the apprentice. Re: want to know
aint sure what a tortured guise is.
you can gleen the internet talk to folks who will talk an read books except maybe books all this info is free.
what aint free is keepin the lights on to read this free info
until some can see the diference between bein owed an generosity/kindness
we are doomed.

Since this topic has been bumped again, I'll Chime in. HomeDistiller is a free resource to us... Please remember that modding the site is hard work! There are a couple of ChatMods out there for this version of PHBB, and they suck! ...well, the free ones that is...
Then we have to get into the argument from the previous topics on this chat thing. I.E., Nothing is logged or moderated.
I personally like chat. I feel it hightens the learning experience when you can talk to someone one on one.
All said and done, I like chats, and time zones don't matter, as I work the swings, and I am awake for just about all the timezones on different days.
All this being said, I went with a 3rd party, Pay For Service, Java Mod on the site I run. I will pass on the Info to UJ, But you guys gotta remeber, This is a free site.

Re: want to know
Not speakin directly for UJ here. I can suggest that it's possible that someone might see the advancement of the knowledge that they've put forward as payment enough. That people take a starting base of knowledge that's free, learn the basics and then contribute new ideas and refinements freely and without withholding, holding to the principles of expanding the knowledgebase here. That you do that in the spirit in which it was given, without the intention of withholding information for profit.
Believe me, you are taking some of the work off UJ and the mods if you are answering questions from others with less understanding and UJ and the mod team do not have to do it every time.

punkin right, I belong to another site , no one can answer any questions (post question only)---- only the mods, that are scientist ,chemist or engineers.
can answer.they whould be some busy on hear! But on the other hand it would not heart to help contribute for hardware replacement/updates

Re: want to know
The problem with chat is it takes about 5,000 unique visitors a day to keep a chat going 24 hours a day. This is a hard number to hit 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Also it looks to me like almost everyone is from New Zealand, Austrialia or the United States. I know we have two very active posters from Africa and Vietnam. I didn't want to leave anyone out. My point is were talking about active posters from maybe 10 time zones, Not enough to maintain a 24 hour a day chat. On the other hand you can have a lively discussion with less than 100 unique visitors a day. I think the problem of random people getting on here and asking questions without doing research would only be worse with chat. I like the board the way it is and I think Uncle Jesse has done more for this Hobbie than most of use will ever realize.goatroper57 wrote:i go to yahoo chat and ther all over the world to so i dont see how that would make a difference as a person can just go in and chat when thay wanted to like in yahoo chat i go in yahoo all different time of the day iam sure some of the members in here would hang in ther different times of the day to answer questions and just shoot the s**t in real time and that way ya can get more input on your questions like i said above thers a site for brewing beer and wine and thay have a chat room i was in ther a couple of times but thay talk about makin beer, wine and somthing called mead what ever that is but they wouldin realy answer any question on distilling whiskey etc. thats were i found this site i think it could work maybe

Re: want to know
[rant] I agree and support the belief that knowledge should be free. but that ought to be for both sides og the conversation, the one supplying and the one recieving.
I know how much it costs to run a private server, so for that part UJ is covering the bill, doesn't seem fair that free knowledge ought to cost one person that much.
I also aplaud UJ for keeping this site advert free. I hate banner ads and pop ups with a passion. Many sites I'm actibe on have chosen to go go the direction of google ads, just because it covers the costs, and I'm sure a profit could be turned if UJ had such on his mind, but yet, the site is operated at a deficit, just because of principle.
I Propose a voluntary subscription, of no paricular set amount, to keep the site afloat and to show our apreciation.
if its voluntary, without catch, then it still remains free, as in unemcumbered, cause in monitary sence Knowledge isn't free, but let's keep it as free as possible.
OK, I've had a few and am feeling like a little of an Idealist.
personally I've enjoyed this resourse and would like to see it avaliable for many years to come. [/rant]

Re: want to know
I'd like to share a little story about this really cool old guy I know.
He owned a huge piece of property and an entire arroyo on the south end of town. He was an avid hunter like many where I live. He built himself a nice little shootin' range in his arroyo after a lengthy battle with the city.
After a few years this kind gentleman felt bad that there was no free place for folks to go shootin' here, especially for skeet. So he opend his personal shootin' range for outsiders to use. He made it a private club, members only, with no charges or dues. He just wanted to retain the power to kick folks that were problems off his land.
Everythin' went swimmin'ly for the first year. The second year he allowed some of the guys he trusted to set the club up more "officially" and they got themselves elected as officers along with the landowner. They changed everythin' and made folks pay dues and fees. The old guy got pissed and tried to tell em all to bugger off. They got him voted outta his officer position and took over the club and his land. He spent two years and lots of money on lawyers to get the club shut down, then he posted his land and lets NOONE on it.
When folks pay money for somethin' it becomes "theirs" in their mind. This board, and the server it exists on, is Uncle Jesse's. He has the only say. Not even we Mods have any say. UJ said four times very clearly that he doesn't want donations for this forumn or his server. He clearly stated he wants this information to be free. Why do some of yall keep tryin' to manipulate him? Accept his over and over repeated desire that this board be free.
If yall wanna help him and give him a big thankyou, send him a personal note of thanks, or even better harass yer local bottle shops to carry his products (Pioneer Spirits). It's not as easy as pressin' a button to send a few bucks, it'll require some perseverance and effort, but what better way to show yer appreciation than to help his new business?

Similar thing happened to a Gliding club I belonged to. Some smart arses decided to take over 'their' club and after a few years and heaps spent on lawyers they pissed of and the club is no more. I wouldn't fly at the club the arse holes started and ended up selling my glider and don't fly anymore.theholymackerel wrote: ...
