Can anyone tell me the inside surface size of a full size empty bourbon barrel in square inches?

Barrel dimensions vary.

I got between 3000 and 3500 square inches.

Thanks!! I've set up ; proportionately, 16 1-gallon jugs with 60 square inches of charred oak and 10 square inches of charred sugar maple and have given all the in the freezer and in the 150 degree soak...off and on for 5 days. What a fabulous creation!!!!

After taking 4 barrels apart, all 4 have only a 1/4" usefullness of the 1" oak stave availiable. By cutting the staves into strips and charring both sides, I can get the same proprtion of inner barrel surface to alcohol. The result, in only 5 days is a caramel colored, oaky/maple, moonshine bourbon. How sweet.

I've thought of proportioning the surface area of oak in my aging jars to a whiskey barrel, but was too lazy to do the math. It seems most people use alot more oak than I do. I use about a 3/4" square cube of toasted oak to a quart. So now I suppose I should compare my oak squares to the barrel.

I've got to start doing this soon...

What's the color like after 5 days?

did 2 litres of all grain a while back, added a 6" stick (3/4X3/4) of charred oak
24 hours had a nice straw colour
48 hours nice deep yellow
1 week deep dark brown

3 months later it is smooth as silk with the kick of a mule
less is definatly more when it comes to oak, this had a noticable oak note, without being overpowering, far better than lots of oak for a short time.
