Recharring Oak

Post by violentblue »

anyone recharr then reuse their oak?

had some used aging sticks that I tossed into my last batch, not much coloring or flavoring coming through, so I pulled them out let them dry then I gave them a good re-charring. Didn't scrape them or any thing, just a good dose of the propane torch.
I tossed them back in and 24 hours later color is starting to come, and its got a real nice oak flavor coming along.

Absolutely - you've got to be Scots to make Scotch - to reuse I rechar by pouring some over-proof on the chips and lighting it - when they look ready chuck on some under proof to douse it - using propane is a bit like using store bought flavours
