persimmon wood?

Post by itsroger »

Does anyone know if persimmon wood is good for aging spirits? I just had a large persimmon tree to blow down, it'd make plenty of aging wood.
Just wondering if any of you have tried it and what results you had...guess I'll try it, already got two sticks laid out ha ha ha.

That is quite a nice timber. I have seen a few turned bowls and I know it is popular for japanese and korean furniture makers, but I am afraid I have no idea at all about its use in ageing spirits. Have never eaten a persimmon fruit either - are they fermentable?

Maybe try trading persimmon wood to a woodworker for some oak.

I don't know if persimmon is classified as a fruit wood. I have a few on the edges of the pastures and the persimmons are quite popular with the horses and goats. As far as eating a persimmon, if you get one that's not ripe (say, before the first hard frost) your mouth will nearly turn inside out. Ripe ones are sweet and mushy with lots of seeds.

Hack has the right idea...trade for oak.

I've had good results from all sorts of fruit woods, just use the heart wood and atay away from the green, I would use it to compliment the oak not replace it.

Thanks very much, that was very helpful, I would guess that anything thats good for the same things as oak should be good for the spirits. Just get different flavors from them.
