Macerating
Hey guys.
I've been through the tried and true and now I'm looking for some other suggestions.
I'm into making my neutral and soaking different fruits pantie dropper style,(cranberry, blueberry, mango, kiwi fruit, peach, raspberries and strawberries). But I'm after other things to macerate.
have people tried nuts? and or other spices? What kind of effect does oily nuts have on the alcohol? is it ok?
if anyone has other ideas on what I can soak and how I can do it it would be appreciated!
David

Re: Macerating
I keep a supply of sweet red pepper vodka on hand. It is very strong in flavor and does not mix well with other flavors however if you like red peppers a shot mixed with 7up or Sprite is excellent. I also do a crab apple maceration in an unsweetened version because I love the bitter undertone. I mix it with 7up or Sprite also.SuperDavid wrote:Hey guys.

I always macerate with 95.6%. I find it colors better than 40% and dissolves most oils and other stuff better. Example is the crab apple maceration in this thread http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... =11&t=8110 produces a creamy beer type head when mixed with soda and stirred. It has a weird sour/sweet taste that I really love but most people don't care for it.
You have to have a good supply of neutral to experiment like this. Fortunately I have lots.

Re: Macerating
If you are in to macerating, I would HIGHLY recommend this book:
Homemade Liqueurs by Dona and Mel Meilach It is out of print, but can be found for a few dollars from places like amazon, or off ebay.
You can read a little bit about it from the home site's "book" page at: http://homedistiller.org/resources/books" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
NOTE if you order from amazon, order from the link on the book page (the site gets a small kick back from amazon for the sale).
This is a wonderful book. The panty dropper method is a great method. This book goes into many ingredients which are wonderful infused in nuetrals.

There's a lot more on the Experimental page too.
My Thai Terror is a beauty and quite popular.
I'm doing one with English Walnuts at the moment from Pint's Grünne Nüsse recipe.
There's plenty more there too

Re: Macerating
Not sure if there is an online version. I paid less than $7 for the copy I have, so I never even looked. The book has been out of print for years. They made a newer book (same authors), but this older version is much better.

Re: Macerating
I've never tried any of the liquer recipes, but the book "From Harvest to Moonshine" by Byron Ford has a ton of recipes for liquers, whiskeys, brandys, almost anything you can think of. The book is published out of New Zealand so you Aussies might have a little better luck getting ahold of it.

All the fruit I've had macerating pantie dropper style has finished...the mango is a stand out and has been a crowd pleaser! very nice!! and the kiwi fruit, peach, raspberry and cranberry are also very nice but havn't been tested on the guineu pigs(work mates).

Re: Macerating
Macerated some with mangos and peach syrup that got rave reviews. I done the (frozen) mangos just like the strawberries but I didn't get much syrup from the mangos. I thought it was sort of plain and was about ready to toss it until I found the that jar of peach syrup. The sugar in the syrup sweetened it and the peach flavor went great with the mango flavor. The peach syrup I had on hand was actually a mishappen from some jelly making that went wrong. For some odd reason the jelly didn't gel. Going to try some with bannanas, pears, and maybe some apples.
