Leaky handles on s/s stock pot

Be warned of cheap shit stainless stock pots with leaky handles (around the rivets).

I bought a cheap thin stock pot on purpose as I wanted to use it as the inner pan for a double boiler. Was not bothered though as I drilled out the rivets and removed the handles anyhow.

Had a bit of bother filling the holes. If I was doing it again I would use a copper nut and bolt and then solder it. Or a copper rivet. Or blah blah blah

Its wortht taking the handles off anyway unless you actually need them.

You get what you pay for! Now they are Chinese...tomorrow they could be Aussie

Remove handles and weld/braze/solder or rivet some copper patches over the holes.

Will be cost-effective in the long run more or less.

If you back the rivets up with something solid and give them a whack or two with a hammer it will expand the rivets enough to stop the leaks. It worked for me.

i have a couple stockpots similar to that. believe it or not i actually use them as stock pots. i am posting because my rivets are aluminum or some other soft metal, in case it makes a difference to any one. check your metals. my cookers are all commercial grade stainless with welded stainless handles. cob

I'd like to hear more on that from somebody. My rivets are a soft metal also, and seem to be aluminum. They squished pretty easily when I whacked them with a hammer and have corroded a bit like you would expect aluminum to in a still.

Soft alloy rivets on mine, presumably aluminium. I only use it for a collection container, not for any storage. So it is not a huge problem for me, as long as I keep an eye on the liquid level. But still not acceptable in a cooking vessel.

Yup, you get what you pay for. Serves me right for being a cheapskate.

I use stockpots constantly for cooking,iced tea(4 gal) the rivets are crap,won't stay clean at all.
If you MUST have handles,rivets grind off easily,use SS nut ,bolt, washer.....DrJ

They look like the ones from India. They have them in various sizes from 5 litre up to 12 litre at the local Sam's Wharehouse store.
I use a 7 litre one as my thumper. I drilled out the handles on the lid because they leaked, and soldered a strip of copper over the holes.

Luckily my pottie is made a bit better. The handles are spot welded rather than drilled and pop rivetted with aluminium rivets.
