OK - 2 gal. in 6 gal. bucket

Dumb question # 134 - I have a 6 1/2 gallon fermenting bucket with airlock and wanted to only ferment 2 gallons.........Is that OK? or is that too much oxygen? (I said "Quit Laffing")

it will work, co2 will "blanket" the wash and displace the o2

You are quite alright..was bored one day and tried to figure out the volume of CO2 that my mash was letting off..not going to redo it atm but just 1 KG of sugar lets out a hell of a surprising amount of CO2. This displaces any O2 that would be able to contact the surface easily within the first few moments of activity also so no worries

No such thing as a dumb question, but they are the easiest ones to answer.

When I used to brew, I did all ferments in 5 gal carboys, even small scale experiments and never had problems. Inow have collected various sizes of bottles and jugs for experiments, easier to handle. Right now, for big batches, I have a 30 gallon plastic swim pool filter (?) holder up on a rack, the top about 5 1/2 feet high (for easy siphoning). After I pitched the yeast, put on the lid, then covered it with a big garbage/trash bag, When I checked and stirred a few hours later, looking in, up on my tippy toes, I caught a massive whiff of co2. Thinking about it right now, the sinus's in the back of my head HURT! Only get the odd gnat, and spraying the legs at bottom keeps away the ants, , , -hey-
