2nd run not so great

Post by Whiteman Slim »

I think it may have been because my sugar will low. I FORGOT to check my SG at the start! The SG was .999 at the end. I read foreshots is around 40 -45c; throw away.

then comes the HEADS around 65-70c. Then HEARTS good part! 78-80c . Then TAILS around 85-90c. Well. I did not get thing until 75-80c and it is a very very slow dip. Any help? Was my sugar low, can not tell because should have check the SG in the start, I know. Any feed back would be cool and greatly. I used Corn meal mash (8lbs) and 3 lbs sugar if it help with anything. thanks

If I had to guess you need about 2-3 times more sugar. But you didin't say how big your batch was. For 5 gal you need about 7-9 lbs of sugar I think.

EDIT: and i am not sure where you are getting those temps from......

Batch is a five gallons. Thermometer is in the top of the column. My set up is a keg-pot still with a (mile hi) reflux / pot still tower -30". Heat is gas. Thanks for trying to help!!

I would say more sugar for more alc content for sure. I personally don't start getting vapor untill about 77-78C in my column though. So what you collected at seems normal to me. But every still is different.
But I am not an expert and am dealing with my own issues too...

I will say you right about the sugar. You said you start to get yours around 70-75c is it a slow dip very slow, about how long do it take to run 5 gallon?

Well like everyone will tell you every still is different and I am just learning how to use mine. once the temp equalizes at 78 I have been collecting very slow (needle valve) at about 3-4 drips/sec and this really takes all day to do a 5 gal wash. But from what i have read I can collect at about +500ml/hour with my column and still collect 94%.

That is about how long it took me with my 1st run (sugar wash), Thanks one more time! I think will start with say about 8lbs sugar and 8lbs corn meal next, and check SG at the start this time!
