When starting a new mash

Post by W.S.C.beachman »

Ok When doing Grain washes and you want to start from beginning..how many (pounds, cups, gallons) of grains per gallon of water do you use?? For instance when I did my UJSSM the other night I realized I had over 2 gallons(22cups dry) of grains for a 5.5-6 gallon bucket. Ill get a good 4.5 gallons wash to run I am sure, but I thought that was quit a bit of grain for that amount of agua. I suppose most will say"Hmmmm well its up to your taste" LOL Less grains=Less flavor right. So would there be any off taste or nasties that any one wants to point out???

Golden Pond recommends 12.5 lbs good yellow cracked corn, and 7.5 lbs sugar in a 5 gallon mash. See his recipe under Tried and True Recipes. I use 12.5 lbs cracked corn, and 6 lbs sugar in a 25L mash. Starting SG is 1.065.

Cool thanks, I was figuring that it is just one of those "well just try what ever and figure it out but this is what I have seen or I do this type of thing"...:) Ive got 22 cups of grains in approx. 5.5 gallons of water Ill see how she turns out in the next day or so. My starting Gravity was 1.08 with 16 cups sugar. I hope I didn't over do it...hahaha
