Newbie Question

Post by bootlegger37 »

Purchased a 2 inch copper pipe for column for still. Previously used an industrial water cooling pipe and is very dull/dirty whats the best method for cleaning inside the pipe. Also worried about possible contaniments that may have been in the water.

If it has lime scale on the surface, a wash in dilute 10% hydrochloric acid solution will remove the lime. Hydrochloric acid is usually avalable cheap at hardware stores as a 30% solution. It may take several hours soaking to remove it all if it is a thick layer. A good rinse with clean water afterwards will remove the hydrochloric acid remants. A further soak with vinegar might also help.

If diluting hrdrochloric acid, add the acid to the desired amount of water, never add water to acid to dilute it as it may boil and spit back at you.Always wear goggles and use PVC gloves when handling strong acids.
