Filter bags for spirits, anyone using?

Post by Nightforce »

I recently purchased some large filter bags for filtering mashes after they ferment but I think they are to dense to use for that. I got a 1,5,10, and 25µm set and figure that the 1µm bag would be great for filtering after aging/oaking. They are made from polypropylene felt and according to THIS link, polypropylene has excellent chemical resistance to ethyl alcohol at both 20°C and 60°C.

Next thought was to stick with some natural coffee filters, although they are not as tight on particulate retention.

I find coffee filters slow enough and they clog up/swell/slow down after a litre or two of oaked spirits. They also let enough fine particulates through that I need to siphon off the clear stuff when they settle out.

Settling for a week and siphoning off is my finest filter. There will be no sediments in the subsequent bottled spirits. The waiting is easy and very cheap, and my mini racking cane does the rest in a few minutes.
