Best fermentation container?

Post by dixiegurl »

I have run about six batches of sugar wash. They have been fine, but just have a slight harsh taste to them...all the same. They don't taste like store bought vodka. I have been using a new Home Depot 5 gal bucket and lid for my fermentation pot. Is it that critical that it's not considered food grade? Will the fermented alcohol absorb some of that plastic to my taste? It seems the distallation would get rid of that, unlike say, in a wine. Should I, after a day or so, transfer my fermentation to a glass carbouy? I have one for wine. I assumed back in the day, they used about anything. Thanks guys.

If it's a HDPE bucket I'd say you're fine. I've been using plain old HDPE 5,6, and 8 gal buckets for wine and distillation without harsh flavors in the wash. I'd look at either your cuts or the type of yeast/nutrient base you're using.

Was thinking about getting a few of those myself. I've got 2 7.8 gallon buckets, several plain old 5 gallon buckets, 2 9 gallon tuff tanks (which I really like) and want a few more because you never seem to have enough. This year should be my first year getting any decent amount of grapes off my grape vines that I planted 4 years ago. Polypropylene, so they should be even better than the HDPE buckets.

I have a few buckets I use for mead, and they seem to do just fine. I'm betting it's something in your ferment or cut.
