Hello everyone!

Post by Whitedog »

Hi,
I am Whitedog and I am new to distilling for about a month now. I have a new reflux still and have run two separate fermentations of corn mash, one malted and boiled then a second off that. I have also run a sugar wash through this still. I have to say that the first run was a little funky until I figured out how to control temperature and water flow but subsequent runs turned out some very nice product!I have also rerun some low cost brand vodka and came out with some nice neutral stuff, good for mixing with commercial flavorings. I have made wine and beer in the past so fermenting is something I am familiar with; however, the speed at which some of you perform this task is far from perfection on my end... I have two sugar washes on right now and plan to run some of this during the weekend. I bought my still from mile high and it is the small 3 gallon combination still with copper packing and Rasching rings. I am more than pleased with the engineering and quality of this product. I have tried propane and electric heat, I prefer electric over any burner that I have available at this time. I am considering the single burner from Northern Tools with multiple control valves in which I plan to use in conjunction with a variable regulator. I use plastic fermenters and a heating pad underneath, when needed. I have been using a combination of 1118 and baker's yeasts with decent results. Anyway, thanks for all the good information presented on this site! I will try to contribute as I can.
