Bernzomatic torch
I'm considering buying a new mapp gas torch and I'm looking at the Bernzomatic ts 4000 and ts 8000. Is the 8000 that much better then the 4000 for a guy that does still building and very little plumbing? Also is there a better torch on the market for a competitive price?
Thanks RD

Rubberduck:
There are lots of those types of torches out there. I have one of the original spitfire (the guys who invented the swirl flame torch) torches. I don't know if you are soldering 2" pipe or not, if you are, I would suggest the 8000 cause it is adjustable and has extra heat.
I've used the 4000 and it works great too, I found I needed both that one and the spitfire torch to get the 2" up to enough heat to solder. I love the push button start, sweet!
Hooch.

I just bought a Ts 4000 off US ebay for $14.95, + shipping to OZ which was $20. If I bought a new one here they are $114AU. I used it to built the new 4" column. It was hot enough for hard solder too. I would not think you need to pay the extra bucks for the 8000, unless you just want too spend money.

Re: Bernzomatic torch
Hi RD, I use an ordinary plumbers propane torch and when soldering 2" pipe, I spend a long time bringing the copper upto temp. Frustrating...
I will wait for this thread to mature, but I am looking at the TS8000 as a great replacement.
Can these torches be used to make a crossflow condenser?
Thanks... S.

I have one of the 4000 series torches that I use Mapp gas with ....it's all you'll ever need.
I built my 2" Bok with it and it heats copper that size with ease.

I totally agree, I just built my new 4" plated column with a ts4000 with no trouble at all. I even used it to make some tacks with hard solder too.NcHooch wrote:I have one of the 4000 series torches that I use Mapp gas with ....it's all you'll ever need.

I'm leaning to the 4000. From what I can gather it's all I will ever need.
One thing I thought of is this, I like mapp gas but I have a cheep torch. If I was using the 8000 on propane would it be comparable to the 4000 on mapp gas? Mapp gas is expensive and propane is cheep.

You can use either torch on either gas, the ts4000 on propane seems a lot hotter that with a normal propane head.

Re: Bernzomatic torch
Well I made the jump. I got the 8000 and this thing is insane. I'm impressed, this torch is so much better the my old POS. I think a 4000 would have been just as good if this one is only 30% hotter. This torch goes like a raped ape, you have to be careful not to burn the flux out of the pipe if your running full blast.
4000 or 8000 or whatever the push button start is fantastic. You know how your working on a project and you set the torch down and don't turn it off because you don't want to relight it? Inevitably something gets burnt. Not the case with a push button start and it saves a lot of fuel.
Even if you only do small projects this is a tool that is worth it's weight in gold.
