Rum barrel oak

Post by NO1DLR »

I have seen some "Plantation rum barrel oak" for sale, and on the packet it says "add 10-15g of oak per litre of vodka, then add xxxxxx rum essence".

Can I add more oak than recommended, and skip the essence to make a rum, in a similar way that one would make bourbon out of bourbon barrel oak?

IMO not really.

Rum profile is best created by using and reusing,,,,and reusing your dunder and perhaps yeast as well.

Don't have to use oak at all to acheive a rum profile (hence white rum).

Not my cup of tea but the essence may be requiste for your "parlor trick rum"

I add 2 sticks of oak to a litre of neutral. Each stick is about 1/2" x 1/2" x 2" and weighs about 8-10 gms. It takes about 3 months to kick in. First couple of weeks it tastes like Pinocchio pissed himself.

If I don't want to make rum the 'real' way, am I better off using a large amount of that rum barrel oak, say 50g of oak per litre of neutral for 2 weeks, or should I just use an essence?

adding more oak does not cut for me, less is more,to much oak and it can be bitter.small amount over longer time and larger "chunks"

Making rum is easier than making a neutral(IE: vodka), since the molasses has all the nutrients you need, where a plain sugar wash(for a vodka) needs a boucoup of added crap for nutrients, and rum wash is run in a simple pot still where a neutral needs to be run in a column. So, why bother turning a neutral into rum?? Want rum? Make rum!
