Fermenting In Louisiana

Post by Bayou-Ruler »

Well below is a list of the items I have on order. All from Brewhaus. I intend to use a propane burner for my heat source and also will insulate the column and pot. I will probably piece together a heat exchanger using a heater core for the cooling water.

1 of: Starter Kit- Gold
1 of: Essential Extractor Pro Series II- Complete Distiller
1 5.2 pH Adjuster
4 of: Airlock
4 of: Turbo Pure 48 Yeast
1 of: Distiller's Nutrients
4 of: Thermometer- Stick-On
2 of: Fermenter- 32L w/Lid and Grommet
2 of: Clearing Agent- Sparkolloid 4oz.
2 of: Brewhaus Equipment Cleaner, 2oz
1 of: Brewhaus Equipment Rinse, 1.1 Lbs

My primary goal is to produce distillate close to or equal to 190 proof. I also plan on making some good old corn whiskey to.

Brew Haus ships really fast so you should be up and going in no time unless the Essential Extractor Pro Series II- is on back order.(It had been for awhile.) Just wait till you open that box and see all the cooling tube connections  I just got mine about 2 weeks or so ago and hope to run off my first this weekend. My buddy has been using his for several years and he gets some pretty high % finished product.
Welcome and good luck with your new hobbie.

I'd be interested to know what your column looks like when you get it. Mine seems to have an extra set of cross over cooling ports, from the one I ordered. I'm not complaining by any means, I think they are either changing their column or they sent me something better than what I ordered so they could full fill their order to me. Once I figured out all the hose connections, I was very pleased with the operation of the the still. This past weekend I used mine in both pot mode for some Bourbon, and in reflux for some neutral spirit. Although I pruchased a 1500 watt hotplate from another source, I decided to go outside and I used a propane turkey fryer style stove. The still was very easy to run and control.
Looking forward to your thoughts once you get all of your gear.

Well 10 days in and it looks like it will be another week before they will be able to ship my order! Still on back order and awaiting parts from suppliers. I have ordered both Lalvin EC-1118 Wine Yeast & Red Star Premier Cuvee Yeast to experiment with as well as the Turbo yeast I have.

Wont it be ok if it is only used for cooling the water used to cool the column??It doesnt come into contact with any of the wash/distillate.forgive me if i am wrong.
An aircon condenser would work well too if ok.

It won't be a problem if it's only used to cool the water in your condenser.

Well, I'm am still waiting for my distiller to ship! If all gos well should ship next week. In the mean time I have been doing a lot of reading and studying fermentation and distillation. It may be a good thing that there have been delays, its forced me to not be hasty and to study up.

Great observation Bayou.

Recon youve had questions in your mind answered before you realized you would ask the question too.

Not saying I have not made mistakes as such. But I kinda knew how to run my (first) still before I ever did just by pouring over the info here. Or I at least knew what to expect.

Kinda like how we (as young wippersnappers) know how to drive a car as we watch our parents drive our entire childhood.

This site helps you learn by other's successes (and failures) rather than your own failures. Failures can be good too but the learning curve here is the game changer that trumps a potential negative experience.

You are right, about having questions answered & this web site. I have been reading this site and Tony Ackland's site as well as others. I have everything ready to roll except for the Distiller. I have plenty of Lalvin EC-1118 & Red Star Premier Cuvee Yeast as well as the Turbo Pure 48 yeast I bought before I was educated about yeast.
