whats the main board icon mean???

whats the main board icon mean???
This may be a stupid question, and already answered some where on this site (I looked briefly but with out any luck). That round icon that is to the left of each topic on the index board. What do all the different changes it makes mean. I figured out the moving lines mean some ones reading the post, the * I think means the poster is reading it. What does the ! mean??? how about the red lines???
thinking inside the box is for squares....

When you are logged in the red lines mean that there has been a new post on that topic since you last logged in.
