Force a wine stain = simulating old wine barrels?

Post by beanshine »

I have wanted to try some aging with wood from wine barrels but I don't have any wine barrels. Could I simply get some white oak (or whatever wood) and soak it in some cheep red wine for a little bit (like a month maybe) and it act the same as a wine barrel that I would buy? Also, I’ve never done the distress aging but I’ve read about it and I figured if the wine needs to get deeper into the wood, maybe I can distress age the wine with the wood chips in it to get the wine deep into the wood if needed (not even sure it would work that way, but it makes sense in my head). White oak is all around me and cheep wine is cheep and everywhere, so if this would work then that's the way i'm going to do it. Is this something anyone has tried, or that everybody does and I just don't know it?

If not I’m going to give-r a whirl anyway.

I'd give it a try. I've heard of using sherry and the likes to get a barrel ready for whisky. Guess you must be a long way away from a wine producing region? they sell half barrels at the hardware store here, for using as pots

Yea, no wine barrels anywhere around here. Maybe everyone else simply doesn't have this problem. If that's the case then I'm gonna give it a whirl and let everyone else who can't easily get wine barrels know how well or how bad this will work. May be a while.
