Folks with milkcans from MileHi

Post by gobbler777 »

Looking for some insight here from folks with milkcan stills. I have a 13 Gallon milkcan still, im wanting to do away with the column and just run a worm straight out of the top of my pot. Im planning on leaving the lid and getting some type of fitting to clamp onto the peice that the column clamps to. Has anyone else out did this with there milkcan and if so i would like some direction on where to find a fitting that comes up and 45's over to go to a worm if there is such without having to solder. Any help would be appreciated.

You should be able to check back with mile-hi for additional advice.

St. Pat's got a wide variety of SS parts and connections. You should be able to put together just about anything you can dream up.

It'd help if ya filled us in a little. What you're proposing sounds like a hell'uv'a bad trade off from a column. If you want to go potstill you can do it without any soldering or welding (it'll cost a few dollars more) but what you described is going ghetto.

You had a falling out with Mile-Hi? Your still?? WTF? Had a falling out with St. Pat's?? Are you just having a bad day??

WW,

why is a coil in the bucket method 'ghetto'? Please explain.

Gobbler, you started with a pot still http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 0#p6836490 and have evidently since gone away from it, and now wish to return to it - you don't say what to -or so it reads to me????????

What was the problem with your first design (apart from the thermometer :) )? Also have a look at "thermometer in a pot still thread" in the reading room.

Have a look at "Pot distillation and Design" in the index page and you're sure to see something that comes close to what you're looking for. Or post a pic so we can see what you have now.

Simple potstiller. Slow, single run.
(50 litre, propane heated pot still. Coil in bucket condenser - No thermometer, No carbon)
The Reading Lounge AND the Rules We Live By should be compulsory reading

Cumudgeon and loving it.

I have no idea what fitting your looking for, but if it is a try clamp/sanitary type then it is used on conical fermenters, milk and food industry.
some have made there own ,,see easy flange.

Sorry guys i think we got our wires crossed here :? I am running a pot still and i am going to continue running a pot still. What im wanting to do is get rid of my 40 inch column that i have on top of my pot. I wanting to come up about 6 inches off the top off my pot and 90 then 45 over to a worm, i dont think i have been running my still as efficiantly as it should run because of the design of the column. I was just looking for a few cheap ideas on how to get rid of my column i have on top of my pot now. I looked a the St. Pats website and they have exactly what i would need but everything is alittle pricey, thats why i was asking for some other suggestions from other members.....

Blanikdog, since that post i no longer use a thermometer, i think with me running my still with the 40 inch column its actually trying to reflux because the vapors have to rise up so far, i will try and post a picture so u can see what im using.

Husker,
gobbler doesn't mention the 'coil in the bucket method'. He simply states a worm out of the top of his pot. That's ghetto. I have no problem with a worm in a bucket and I intend to give it a try in the future. More nostalgic in my opinion. Since he has added additional information to this post he has shed more light on his intentions. The original post had seemed to be a frustrated user trying to cut through the "technical" aspects of the still and simply get output.

not frusted and not trying to get more output, my first still was a stainless cooking pot with a copper coil coming out of the top and i got alot more flavor and more hearts, and with the still i have now i get decent flavor and a decant amount of hearts but way to many tails(and yes i am taking it slow and steady during my runs not doing stripping runs) i guess in my first post i assumed that when someone read the post they would know what i meant by a worn coming out of the top of the pot since im running a "pot still", and thats also why i was calling for folks who have a milkcan still(which obviously you dont have WW) and may have done something similar to theirs that im wanting to do to mine, anyway since some of you may have saw the picture who do not have a milk can still and now know what it looks like, maybe someone could lead me in the right direction on what would be the best route to take as far as going to a worm

on the top of the lid it has a 3 inch pipe with a 4in flange if that helps any
