2 day hangover what was I thinking

Post by rubber duck »

I've not had much experience with mass produced likker and I certainly don't over indulge when I do drink it, but....

2 days ago a old friend came up and with him he brought a bottle of Laphroaig and a bunch of boudin sausage for the grill. Well this seemed like a good occasion to really tie on on, so throughout the night I drank a pint of that fucking nasty bog water and chased it with a couple of beers. That's a really heavy night for me but I've done it before on good shine and had no problems in the morning.

So two days latter I still feel like there's a little demon trapped in my skull screeching to be let out. How the hell can anyone stand to be a alcoholic when you have to wake up feeling like this after a night of commercial swill?

I knew commercial booze was bad but this should be illegal. I think if I ever take a hiatus from stilling I'll have to quite drinking. This has been a real eye opener, never again.

Really makes you wonder why anyone would do that. I cant even look at store bought alcohol anymore. When I open it, all I can smell is heads, tails...and something else.

Hope you feel better...;)

And that Laphroaig is damn expensive. I am not a big fan of the peaty-tarry - stuff, but the wife and I were out at an Oyster bar, celebrating our 36th wedding anivesery, and saw a bottle of it sitting on the bar.

My wife is a vodka and Rye whiskey drinker, and rarely if ever a dramn of Scotch. But, being ina good mood and all, we decided to give her a try.

I have to say, I like it and so did she. BUt we only had one drink. Went out that afternoon and bought a bottle - $79 for a 26 ouncer. That is pretty steep, and could have been used to buy supplies/sugar/grains and made 2-3 gallons of fine spirits

I would agree though with you RD, the last time I tied one on with store-bought I was hung over for two days as well, but can't ever remember feeling bad after a few too many of my own stuff.

But to get back to why I bought the Laphroaig, I wanted to see what a really peatty Scotch tasted like, to use as a standard against what I make.

I did the same with Rye, in that I went out and bought a bottle of Alberta Premium, which is made out of 100% malted rye, so I could use it as comparison with some of my experiments. I have to say for $23, it was not to bad for a store bought - pretty smooth and creamy in the mouth, and not too strong on the oak, slight sweet after-taste.

I also have some various gin's to find that flaouver variant that I want in my final product.

I also periodicly do a taste test with the son-inlaws to see how they like my latest compared to the store bought.

So I guess that there is a reason for store bought for me, and that is to use it as a comparitor for what I want my own to taste like and what I don't want it to taste like.

On the hangover - lots of gateraide, water and ASA, sunglasses.

"" How the hell can anyone stand to be a alcoholic ''''
from what Iv read those that do not have hangovers are the the ones that are more likely to be alcoholics
maybe their brains are just numb to begin with?

Yeah I know what you mean RD. After drinking some of my own hooch @ 45%, I'm fine the next day. But store bought thats another story...
Maybe our immune systems get used to not having those heads and tails when we drink our likker,
then when you do have someone bring a bottle of commercial round.... Bang, sore head syndrome...

Alcoholics: Man their not sober long enough to have the dreaded hangover.... :esurprised: :esurprised: :esurprised:
Cure: Hair of the dog...Twice...

Hope your feelin better RD and back on the good stuff...
As Kentucky Shinner says,'Cant beat sippin on yer own likker...'... :D :D :D

Laphroaig is one of my favourite scotches. My missus tells me its like drinking a whiskey that someones put out a cigar in it. She's not too far wrong with that comment, but its beautiful all the same

I gotta say though I usually only have a couple of glasses at a time before moving onto the cheaper stuff cause its so damn expensive, so i haven't had enough to experience the kind of hangover your talking about RD

Well at least I got my moneys worth out of it. To it's credit I like the taste, but from now on If I'm going tie one on I'll stick to home brew. Though I don't think I'll be doing that for some time.

My daughter bought me a bottle of Laphroig back when she returned from Scotland, I ended up putting it with some of my feints and re-distilling it.

(although I must admit that Laphroaig is way down the list of my favorite scotches, far behind the likes of Talisker, Lagavulin, The Macallan and Highland Park)
If stupidity got us into this mess, then why can't it get us out?

Yeah, know what you mean OD. Coming from such a whisky rich part of the country where many great tastes were born, makes you wonder if the guy's making it have ever tasted it. My dad cut a bottle of it with The Famous Grouse an aired it for a day or two, turned out drinkable but not worth £29.99. Good job he got it as a present... :D :D :D

My friend says that drinking it is a bit like Marmite/Vegimite, you either love/hate it.
Anyway, heres where it's made. Could think of something else to write on the wall...

EDIT: Oop's, heres the piccie....

Reminds me of Chris Farley in Almost Heroes.

Guy: Don't get blind drunk man, have a taste. It's really delicious whisky!
Farley: Well then, a taste...... it shall be.
Turns bottle up and chugs. While chugging turns back to guy with whiskey still pouring out
Farley: Why don't ya get yer own damn bottle!
continues chugging. End scene.

Scene opens with Farley face down in pig sty.

I'm an Islay freak! #1 Lagavulin, #2 Ardbeg, and #3 is Laphroig. They are my favorite Scotches of all time!!! To me they make me think of a cool evening on the beach with a bonfire. Smoke, seaweed, and a little salt. They are expensive yes, so I usually only have a dram or two a month. A bottle usually lasts me 6 months or more. But they are worth it! Although I do indulge on my birthday and holidays!!! The best is when I'm all alone at night on a cool evening after a good day hunting. I put on my sweater and bring a dram outside with me and sip it and think about stuff. The taste goes perfect with the season and the alcohol warms me up a little. Good "me time" whisky. My wife has me sit on the other side of the room whenever I have some. She says it stinks up the whole house!

The taste is not for everyone, but the taste is incredible. If anyone can make a homemade that tastes like that then I'll trade ya for gold.

I'm pretty certain that Lagavulin wouyld not give a hangover. I have NEVER tasted or smelled heads in it. But then again it's 16yrs in a barrel minimum!!!!

If anyone has Laphroaig that they don't want I'll take it!!!!

HOLY CRAP!! I never thought of that! The inlaws have a big old bottle of glenfiddich that was a present. Nobody can choke that shit down. I think I'll ask for it and run it through again.

Great idea! Thanks!

The inlaws will probably thank you too....oh wait, no they wouldn't, they're fucking dick heads.

Did I say that out loud?
