I've never distilled before but I am about to start. I am an experienced brewer and understand many parts of the distillation process but not everything. Safety is my number #1 concern. I have read that you should make sure you can relieve pressure from a still. How is this best accomplished?
My setup will most likely be a Sankey keg with an internet purchased reflux tower attached to the top and a propane burner(open flame) as the heat source. Do I install a pressure relief valve on the keg(boiler) itself or on the tower? If the tower do I put it at the top with the bung or on the side somewhere? I have read the guides but don't recall seeing anything mentioning a pressure relief valve but I have seen a few posts saying the ability to remove pressure from the still is important for safety. Is the ability to remove the bung from the top of the still count as the ability to remove pressure?

Re: Safety valve question
If you were to get a plugged collumn for what ever reason, you would want the relief valve in the keg.

Re: Safety valve question
most reflux stills are open at the top or vented, sounds like you have a CM that has a top closed with a bung (the rubber is questionable)
most likely that would blow out if it started to build up pressure.

I never thought of adding a valve to mine, but I heard if you distill on the grain its a good idea. Even if it is vented.

Re: Safety valve question
There was a recent thread on this subject.

It's not used by many folks and I've only hear of a pressure explosion happening once, it's your call to make. Don't use a rubber bung in your new rig. Also stop by the welcome center and give intro.
edit you are talking about a pot still right?

Re: Safety valve question
I'm considering a "Mile Hi" reflux tower to be more specific.
(Feel free to critique my choice of company, I'm new to this)
From the replies I take it that the ability to remove the bung at the top is enough to remove the pressure? I've never distilled and figured I would ask a question like this instead of making a huge mistake and not realizing something crazy like if somehow the tower can get clogged and cause a pressure issue.

Re: Safety valve question
It could get clogged if you where doing all grain and messed up really bad. Your probably not going to be distilling on grain with a reflux rig.
Mile Hi is ok from what I've heard but I would spend a little more money and go with Manu. He's on the forum look him up, rock solid reputation.
