A strong earthquake of 7.4 magnitude hit New Zealand, just 4 miles (7 km) southeast of Christchurch, in the middle of the night local time, the U.S. Geological Survey said on Friday.

Wow, 7.4 is huge.

We had a 7.1 three weeks ago, I felt like totally drunk when it occured but didn't even have a sip. :?

I hope nobody of our members and families got hurt, neither other folks, this kind of events are damn horrible.

I just googled about that but they say it was only 4.7, can someone confirm?

4.7 we have two each month or so, you almost don't feel it.

What makes it strong in NZ is that it occured in few deph, only 25 km.

Eww.

I hope thats not un-reinforced masonry i'm lookin' at in that pic.

That's what kills most folks in earthquakes. Also the fact that the eartquake will break the gas lines at the same time it breaks all the water mains... then ya get HUGE fires and no way to put em out.

Quake is confirmed as 7.4

Christchurch is the major city of the South Island (on the east coast about 1/3 of the way down the island)

At this stage quite a lot of damage mainly to older especially brick and masonary buildings and colateral damage to cars etc hit by falling debris but no reported major casualties damage to people.

Here in NZ quakes (normally smaller) are not uncommon we are sometimes known as the Shakey Isles.

We tend to take it pragmatically as it's earthquakes and movements over time have given us so much of our spectacular scenery. We have several active volcanos and lively geothermal areas around the country.

In many cities especially Wellington - the Capital which is on a major fault line there has been a lot of strengthening and rebuilding of buildings but the smaller less vulnerable places have not fared so well (or deemed necessary to spend for a random situation)

Looks like the insurance companies and the earthquake commission ( yes we have one) are going to be busy

Further update - experts are now rating this as within top two worst in the last 100 years for our part of the world. Talking to relatives / family down there they lave lost a lot of stuff - breakages from glassware and crockery being thrown around the rooms etc but still only minor injuries to people and no reported loss of life. I was by all accounts a frightening experience at 4 in the morning

Lots of breakage down there I'd expect, but no loss of life that anyone's heard of, just a couple of injuries - think it probably looks worse than it really is, there are a lot of old stone facades and the like in chch. Hope none of our chch members lost any prized bottles, though! Virtually all my family was out of chch for the weekend, though apparently it was still quite a shake in Nelson / Dunedin.

there's a video on this page of the damage if anyone is interested... and hey, everyone likes looking at destruction

Has been downgraded to 7.1 now, thats still a big quake.33km deep.Apparently felt as far north as New Plymouth.Lots and lots of damage mainly to alot of old buildings, cracks in roads, damage to vehicles etc.Reports of some flattened buildings closer to the epicentre though.

Very lucky so far - no deaths 2 serious injuries - 1 from a chimney falling on him!

There were 2 quakes - the first was 7.4 and this was followed by an aftershock of 7.1

The fact is happened at 4:30 AM helped a lot as 8 hours earlier they city centre would have been full of people in restaurants etc many of which are now in ruins

You know, Kiwi, if I was close to that liquor store I'd offer to help clean the place up in exchange for some of the unsalable but still sealed product.

Just a thought.

Glad everyone down there is basically ok. Buildings you can replace, people not so easily.

Thats right father William we'll scoop it all up into a big strainer remove big pieces of glass don't pour into the sewers I'll take good care of the liquid and see to it is disposed of with the least possible inconvenience to the greater public. I would feel it's my civic duty to do so. Get every wee dram, use a mop if ya have to.
