sugar maple vs "maple"

Post by irishmike »

i bought some "maple" smoking chips the other day and am planing on making them into charcoal in order to do some tennessee style filtering. does it matter that this probably isnt "sugar" maple? I know there are many different types of maple and that sugar, red and silver are all used for making maple syrup. has anyone here had any experience with making maple charcoal?

If making charcoal it will make very little difference. After I make my charcoal I rinse it with water and it has no smell to it at all. I have used maple, cherry and apple charcoal and I can't tell a difference. Maybe it is not completely charred into charcoal for J.D. type filtering so it adds the maple sugar to the final flavor but a the charcoal I have made does nothing but remove flavors and help clean up the shine. I use it for vodka and cleans it up real nice.
A.D.D. and HD don't go together. This hobby takes time and dedication to learn and do it right and safe.
