That's really piss poor isnt it, I know how you must feel OD.

My home was broken into twice in a year by the same person, they took all our kids DVD's, CD's and all my beer out of the fridge.
The best part about it is they got pissed with the grog and told their mates, funny how word gets around.

I'm sure in your gut you know exactly who it is, I just hope it's not someone off this forum but sadly it very well could be.

Cheers.

For my way of thinking tho KS, why would anyone flog such a unique and well known piece? it would be like putting a bloody sign on ya forehead.
Anyway who really knows what goes thru the mind of a thief, when we were broken into they moved a few expensive antique fishing reels aside to get to the DVD's.
I just hope that whatever happens it doesnt lead to more drama for OD.
Cheers.

Taking the flute would make them easier to mark in a line up. And I recon he knew it. Gotta show ID when ya fence stuff round here.

Otherwise ya gotta find someone who preciates the real value of them copper bits.

Sides,,,,,he has his own still.

Prolly just showing off some likker what he tellin his pals he made. Or not.

you guys are right I guess. Especially if he know's OD. I just hate to think someone you know and think you can trust would do that shit... It makes it even worse. Not many flutes around like that so it would really be easy to identify also.

This is a very constructive bit of advice, Mike. Turds come back, get no piss and then get shitty 'n tell the cops. What a bugger.

Goose is right. The whole situation could go south quick. Sad to say. The fire drill plan is great advice. I got one myself, never practiced it, dont plan to use it. But its there. Kinda like a real fire.

A lot of you folks have been firing off knee jerk revenge thinking. Bad advice :!: :!: :!:

THE ABOVE QUOTED ADVICE is the only sound advice I have seen. OD, you have no idea who did this (in reality). It easily could be neigbor kids, who do not know how to drink. THEY WILL get drunk, and get in trouble, and 100% assured, they will want out of trouble. YOU are their ticket out of trouble.

RID YOUR PROPERTY of ALL booze / equip, and take a 3-6 month vacation from stilling.

olddog wrote:I got up this morning had my usual couple of cups of coffee, and went outside for a smoke, I noticed my workshop door was open and thought my wife had been in there to get one of her gardening tools. I went into the shop and I was looking to see if the latest generation of my UJSSM had started fermenting, when I noticed something missing, it was not the flute or my power tools or things that you would expect to get stolen. I had six bottles of whiskey labelled and sitting on the shelf, next to it was a 5lt jar oaking and labelled with a bit of masking tape with malted barley written on the tape. On other shelves were 6 jars of UJSSM all oaking and only the distillation date written on the label, but they were still there, some rotten stinking bastard had been in my workshop overnight and stolen my whisky.
It's not the thing that you can report to the police unfortunately. Today I went and got dead bolts, and a separate alarm system just for the workshop, and spent today installing it all.
There are only 5 people who know what I have in there, my neighbors I can trust with the keys to my house, but I have a suspicion who it might be but it would be hard to prove but I do know they have a liking for whisky.
The moral is only let people who you can trust 100% know what you have got.

OD
Well, I thought I had replied to this last night, but I must have thought better and cancelled it.
I used to work for security company and happen to have a little knowledge about how thieves work.
Sounds like the types you are dealing with are one of two things. They are either poorly executed sneak theives or neighborhood kids who got impulsive. A good sneak theif would have skimmed one bottle and maybe a hand tool you wouldnt really miss. That would be it. That way they could come back in a month or two and do it again. "Skim Diving" is one the terms for it. Leave the cream, but steal the milk. Whereas the kids would have seen something clearly labelled as alcohol and ripped it off as an impulse move. I would say that there is a good 60-65% chance that they are someone you DONT know. They probably arent sneak theives since they took too much and got noticed. So its probably neighborhood kids.
The addition of the deadbolts will be a surefire tell to them that they have been noted and they will most likley move on. If they dont then they might have to graduate to BandE. Once they go to BandE, you have to be careful because it all starts to go downhill from there. Stupid and dangerous are the same thing once you move into this territory. The new hunting camers will give you a clear picture of what you are dealing with if you have a mind. Just make sure to cover any operation lights. Avoid retribution if at all possible because it will only bring more to you. These things have a way of getting out of hand quickly.
Definitely move your equipment .
The one thing you might want to be ready for is visit from the police/sherrif/angry parents if the kids try to fence it or try to drink and get caught. Hide all of you equipment (preferably not on your property )and give them a simple answer. If the kids say he had all kinds of stuff and we stole alcohol from his shed, then the total absence of it will raise a question mark in their heads. If it were me, I would probably get rid of all the alcohol/equipment and start up a nice batch of root beer or something simple like wine. You have to give the police something to make them think the kids are just exagerating and trying to pin it on some poor old guy who makes root beer in his shed. If they show you your own bottles just give them a blank look and tell them "Well, whoever they are, they cant be too bright. The spelled Whiskey wrong. Its Whisky." ( or vice versa)
If they ask why you put in alarms and a deadbolt, just tell them a couple of your tools came up missing, but you werent sure if they were stolen or not, but you put them on just in case. The cops will assume the kids took other stuff and just werent caught.

There are a number of different ways you can play it. Best way is to keep it simple and make it easy to figure out without explaining to them.

If you want to talk about it, I can be PM'ed, but I think Husker an Goose have the right idea.
Sorry about the violation. I know from personal experience that having things stolen from you sucks big time and makes you feel kinda shitty. I really hope it doesnt turn out to be your friend.

Well I'll give you my take on it.

I was kids, someone said something, or a kid noticed, or maybe it was totally random. I'm betting random, if it was at all planed they would have taken more. Crack heads don't think any farther then their next fix,( shiny copper) and a inside thief would have taken some tools. With kids it was a opportunity.

They're going to be back, you can't call the cops and you can't do anything vindictive. All you can do is secure the building.

Kids don't keep they're mouth shut, if one of those little shit birds get hurt or caught with you booze your going to get FUCKED beyond all recognition. I'm With Goose, get rid of every thing right now and let it blow over. It's not worth a bust or a lawsuit.

I have a cabinet in my shop that i store all my likker in. I have it double locked. A couple of my buddies made fun of me for locking it up, I told them it was strictly to keep any kids from stumbling in there and finding it. I thought maybe I was being over cautious. Hell now It seems like one of the smartest things I have done in a long time. I think I will keep the locks on it.
Hang in there OD it will get better, I know this has to suck. I have alway's been lucky I guess I have never had anything stolen. But these days I dont know half the people around me. I use to know everybody. I didn't even have house keys until about 3 yrs ago. I had to change all the locks just so I could have keys. I have lived in the same place for 31yrs and never thought I would have to worry about thieves. Things change.

I spent my day today looking for, buying and securing to the concrete floor a double door steel cabinet to lock up my stills and my booze, it's dyna bolted to the floor from the inside, padlocked from the outside and guarded by a fucking big cranky neo mastiff (google neo mastiff....LOL)

After reading this topic I think one cant be careful enough, but I'm not saying OD wasnt, just saying I did something about my own situation.

Cheers.
