scrubbers

Post by suburban hillbilly »

Hi
I have a question about scrubbers to pack my column and liebig.
I have found a supplier that can give me ss scrubbers but I can't find a source of copper scrubbers here in the uk. I do however have a lot of digital coaxial cable left over from building my house. The inner cable is surrounded by a copper wire mesh and a layer of copper foil (see pics). After reading a few things on the site I get the general impression that copper is better than ss and has some properties that can filter out some impurities by itself. My quetsion is do you think that these would make good quality copper scrubbers. I am talking about the wire mesh rather than the foil but if you can think of a good use for the foil as well I am all ears. Also not forgetting there is also a strand of thick copper wire running up the centre of the inner sleeve of the coaxial cable
All the best.

I don't have proof to back this up, but I would bet that it is pretty much pure copper, and usable for packing. I am not sure how to find out the composition of the copper. If someone knows for sure, then please post a link, or the relevant information.

You can get copper scrubbers in the UK but if you are building your vapour path in copper tube you probably dont need to. Just use stainless scrubbers in a copper column. The stainless packing lasts for years. If you really want to use copper just order some of the amphora structured packing online.

Leave the coax alone as there are better uses for it, and you will need miles of the stuff to generate enough packing.

Here I found Chor Boy copper scouring pads at the grocery store. Just make sure they're all copper not just coated with copper. As long as it is copper your braiding go for it.
If you don't know how to do it yourself, you don't have right to bitch, that you don't have any.

The braided copper in the cable is too fine and tight on it's own, but will work if scrunched up leaving spaces for the vapors to go through. As myles said, copper will erode and the finer the strands the sooner it will start crumbling.

Stainless scrubbers are cheap, last forever, and perfectly proportioned for suspending droplets while allowing free passage for the vapors.

Thanks for that. I also spotted bags of glass marbles at the local garden centre for £1.99 a bag is it worth bunging a few of those in as well?

Haha 'pooped' sounds better, and they would never dare to arrest. I can see the outcome now...poop bags on all floors for the legally incontinent :?

Stainless scrubbers need cleaning along with the alc cleaning run of the whole still.
