Barrel aging

I'm just finishing my first batch of liquor aging in a small barrel, 1 gallon, and I have couple of questions.

After I transfer the liquor to a bottle do I have to clean or sanitise the barrel or I can just use the barrel the way it is and put another batch of the same type of spirit.

In case I decide not use the barrel right way, can I just fill it up with water until I'm ready to use it again.

Dont you think soaking in high proof likker will sanitize??

I was told not to leave water in barrel more then 2 weeks.
