Purchasing Oak Cubes

Post by lateralus »

I have been doing my research on oaking and thanks to loneswinger avoided certain disaster with toasted chips. Before I buy, I was wondering if anyone has any objections or comments in regard to these?

They look ok to me. Toasted is not charred, toasted is fine if that's what your after but there's a difference. Most American whiskeys are done on charred barrels. Toasted can make a real nice product, just different.

+1 They look fine to me. The ones I use look just like this. If you want to char them yourself to give it that bourbon type oaking you can do it with a propane torch, I have done this with good results.

Good luck and sorry for the late post,

Walking Wolf helped me out and sent me a link for sticks so I ordered some of those this morning. And as luck would have it, this afternoon I had some american white oak heartwood scraps given to me by a hobbyist furniture builder for helping him move his TV.

Not a bad idea. I was going to cut down the scraps into sticks and toast some and char some others.

I'd be happy to send you some american oak slabs ...there's a half cord stacked outside...
been drying for 2 years now .
$10 for however much I can fit in a small priority mail box (I'll cut it into small slabs 1/4" thick)
Lemme know

Thanks NChooch! I have a fairly decent supply of white oak now. I'll keep it in mind for the future though. :D
